The summer before I came to college, my Grandpa got really sick and went to the hospital. I went up to hang out with him just about every weekend, and while it was really hard, I've come to really cherish those memories...I feel like I'd never been as close to my Grandpa as I was that summer. My family sounds kind of similar to yours...Grandpa kind of held us all together. And being with him when he was sick brought us all even closer. Even after he passed away, I feel like he's still with us, and the family hasn't fragmented the way I worried it would. I think none of us wants to let Grandpa down. The weekend after he passed away, my Dad, my two aunts and I spent the weekend in Fort Wayne going through Grandpa's things and digging out old videos of my Dad and aunts when they were kids...and it was absolutely amazing. There was such a strong bond between all of us, and it hasn't really gone away.
I guess what I'm trying to say is this: (1) spend as much time as you can with your grandmother now, because while it may be hard, it may also bring some bittersweet memories later. And (2) things may work out better than you think...God knows what he's doing.
Denise- we know that this is really hard for you. Please know that we're all here to help each other in any way that we can. So if you need anything, please let us know. We're only a phone call/email away.
And we love you an awful lot. :)
I hope this helps.
Love, Heather
