Kadayawan Festival

"Nahiusang Katawhan Nakigdait sa Kalibutan"
("One People in Communion with the Earth")

"The life and culture of the indigenous peoples have always been linked to the land. Since time immemorial, Davao has been the homeland of the Indigenous Peoples and land has become the core of their existence. If their land is lost, so is their culture and traditions. Thus, there is a need to defend the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands for them to continually live and practice their way of life- consulting the spirits, working with nature and sharing with others. This is the main reason of celebrating the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2009."

"Kadayawan is a celebration of Good Harvest! This globally famous festival is a weeklong celebration and thanksgiving for nature’s bountiful harvest. Kadayawan Festival is being celebrated every 3rd Week of August. A celebration of the plentiful harvests of fruits and orchids during the season. Kadayawan is derived from the prehistoric word “madayaw,” a warm and friendly greeting also used to explain a thing that is valuable, superior, beautiful, good, or profitable, “Kadayawan” in Mandaya means anything that brings fortune, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. Ethnic tribes around Mt. Apo usually gathered during the harvest-time when they had a bountiful harvest to give thanks to their gods particularly the all-powerful Bathala (supreme God). According to legend, the occasion is noticeable by happiness, singing, and dancing, as well as offerings to their divine protectors." ~Kuya Dino

Davao City is the setting for the movie "Engkentro" I have meet many wonderful people from Davao. I have a great interest in one of their artists, Kublai(Pounce)Millan

Kublai Millan, with his sculpture, DRAGONFLY Kublai Millan sculpture, Meybuyan

"her head and figureclothed by a black veil as though in morning. Her fully exposed torso, however, revealed her as the goddess of fertility, known as Mebuyan in Bagobo myth, who possesse multiple breasts as the main feature of her iconography, giving value to the role of life-giving and life-sustaining nurturance. Possibly, this is closest to the indigenous well springs, although it could easily invite contemporary critique

Now, Racquel also sang the "tula ni Oriang" (Gregoria de Jesus, widow of Andres Bonifacio), a plaintive song that waves in themes of history and nationalism. Her dual portrayal of the indigenous Mebuyan, from whom vital energies radiate, and the revolutionary Oriang, who pusued the ideal of social change represented by the crucial role of women in the Philippine society. Kublai Millan's work can be seen in many locations throughout the Philippines. His Durian is a prominent sculpture located at the Davao International Airport and a wonderful place to stay and see his work is in Davao People's Park and at the Pounce Suites, in Davao, where an extensive collection and Galleries of Kublai Millan's work is on exhibit.
