Astigness! =)

I have been involved for the past month and have not had access to the internet. The problems I have been dealing with are a direct result of the fraud. I just got back on-line this morning. Right now, I need some sleep. However, I just got the opportunity to look at the Cinemalaya Awards:

"The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a film competition and festival that encourages the creation of new cinematic works by Filipino filmmakers - works that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity."

An acquaintance of mine, Bianca Balbuena, is the Assistant Director for two entries this year:
Engkentro (Square Off) and Mangatyanan (The Blood Trail)

Mangatyanan was awarded Best Production Design: Benjamin Padero - Production Design
This was the only award Bianca's films received. *pout, hehehe,  there was a lot of great work, the competition is stiff. Well it looks that way. I need to get copies of the movies and help translating =/

Best Film was Last Supper No. 3

"ASTIG" took several awards:
Best Direction: GB Sampedro for ASTIG
Best Sound: Ditoy Aguila, Junnel Valencia & Mark Locsin for Astig
Best Editing: Charliebebs Gohetia for Astig
Best Performance of a Supporting Actor: Arnold Reyes for Astig

All awards and citations can be seen here:

"Astig" holds my interest at the moment.
The word "Astig" is a Tagalog Slang for "COOL" as in Bad Ass Cool... (I think)
It is used a lot by Filippino's, I know, when commenting on each others photos/artwork or posts in general.

I think "ASTIG" is the derived from the transposition of the "AS" in the word "Tigas" into a prefixed position: "AStig"

"Tigas" or maTigas (ma-) is an adjective meaning: "hard, tough, tenacious"

ASTIG (Mga Batang Kalye)
"written by multi-awarded writer Jerry B. Gracio, produced by Noel Ferrer and directed by GB Sampedro is an episodic tale of four young men whose stories parallel and contrast with the landmarks and various images of Manila. It tells the story of
Ariel, a conman who has to leave his girlfriend upon learning that she is in love with him;
Boy, an expectant young father who has to sell his body to pay his wife's hospital bill;
Ronald, a Chinese mestizo who is coming to grips with his identity; and
Baste, an overly protective son of an OFW who has to avenge his sister.

The film tells the stories of the tough guys of Manila and their resolve to survive the dirt and filth of the "Distinguished and Ever Loyal City."

I think "Mga Batang Kalye" means - Street Boys or Boys of the Street

I would love to see this movie. I want to get the DVDs - well a lot to say about the past month later - off to bed with me!

film, bianca, cinemalaya, tagalog
