I spun around when I heard my name. I had just left Cordelia and was hoping for a quiet walk home and who should catch me, but the man that I promised I wouldn't do just what I am doing.
"Hi Riley"
I said in a soft, not so chipper tone. I didn't want the inquisition, I just wanted to go home, finish packing and move on. I still had to find movers, and tell Buffy and Giles what I had planned, and even talk to Wesley..but none of that would happen tonight.
I looked around, trying not to be obvious in scanning the streets for demons, and then looked at her.
"You know, nothing like a mocha in the morning, Willow, but in the before bed hours? You are going to be a zombie in class tomorrow."
That was an interesting way for me to bring up her not going out in this town at night.
Of course, I couldn't be entirely truthful with her, and I couldn't be as stern as I had been with Buffy, because, yeah, that didn't go very well.
"Always take late night strolls to the espresso pump?" I asked with a smile, still fully planning on going after hostile seventeen, only that would be after I made sure that she was safely home.
"A friend..or whatever I am supposed to call her was in town we decided to have coffee and talk."
I said explaining why I was out so late.
"That and I needed the caffiene, I have a lot to do tonight."
I thought about asking, or rather bribing him to help me move, but I voted against it, I would rather just pay movers than ask someone that I barely know to do it for free.
"As for me being out and lots of umm muggers, I don't think I have anything to worry about. I have my protection, stakes, cross, holy water..."
I just realized what I said, way to go Willow, spill the beans to someone who most likely has no clue.
"I mean, mace..yeah I have mace."
I said trying to cover, not doing such a good job.
The investigator in me had to cover the look of shock on my face and replace it with a look of yeah, you're crazy, instead.
It wasn't much of a different face, but I couldn't believe that she knew about vampires.
I was quiet, and needed to say soemthing soon, but it was clear that some people in this town kept their eyes open and that Buffy was probably one of them.
Of course, because of national security purposes, I couldn't bring that up with her.
"Stakes, holy water, crosses, Willow? I think you might be depriving yourself of sleep, or you are having too many espresso's and then staying up late and watching Dracula movies...."
I gave her a serious look. "Are you okay, Willow?"
I said with a catch a clue type tone to my voice. I didn't want to come out and say hey yeah, there are demons and vampires in this town oh yeah and my best friend who you probably think is hot is the slayer and fights them on a daily basis.
"I am fine, I just have a lot I have to be doing. If you are worried you can walk with me..."
I was still spun. Somehow, I had the feeling hatshe was lying to me, but of course, I couldn't say as much. I couldn't really do that without blowin my cover.
"Sure, Willow, I would be delighted to walk you home, although I might suggest laying off of the scary movies for a little while."
I was becoming dangerously close to blowing my cover and really had to stop prying.
"How far is your place, Willow?" I asked, looking around, hoping that hostile seventeen wasn't around because now wouldn't be the time to go after him.
"What?...No, I haven't asked Buffy out yet...Why? Has she said something to you about me?"
I didn't know where my feelings were. Buffy's last encounter with me made me believe that it wasn't possible that she would want to go out with me, but she had that really hot thing going on, as Forrest..the idiot of the moment, would describe it.
But, then there was Willow, and she was really smart and cute and I was usually happy around her, although that seemed to be out, because she was asking me if I had asked Buffy out.
As we walked, it did occur to me that it was her backwards way of maybe seeing if I was still single, or if I was interested in her best friend.
I wondered if I should be considering it, though. The stakes, holy water and crosses remark hit very close to home.
I couldn't get around to saying interested and I didn't know.
Buffy was kind of...well...she was kind of peculiar.
"So, she hasn't said anything about me?"
Way to look obvious, agent Finn. Good training on the ability to cover emotions up there.
It occurred to me that Willow said something about meetings and that had me mildly curious.
"What kind of meetings, Willow?" Whe you were getting to know someone, it was important to find these things out, even though I knew that there were things that I couldn't be honest with her about.
I said softly, as I found myself disheartened that he wanted her so much.
"Oh just meetings, nothing special."
I said as I looked up and noticed we were about to pass my house. I stop and look to him.
"We're here."
I said softly forgetting there was a sold sign in the yard.I sighed and walked past it to the door and unlocked it. Riley was more than welcome to come in, I wasn't going to be rude and send him away after he walked me home.
"Who's home is this, Willow?" I asked, pretty much thinking that it was her parents' place, or something and they just happened to be out of town or something.
I looked around before walking in, looking for the blond locks of hostile seventeen, before focusing back on her, trying not to be G.I Joe obvious about it all.
I waited for her to open the door and when she did, we both walked in and it appeared that I had moved in to a packing party.
"Okay, I saw the sold sign out front, so who's moving out, other then just you?"
Yeah, I did want something to drink, like an entire case of beer after hearing the news of how her parents had died.
This had been her parents house and this was Sunnydale, so my mind stretched a little bit, thinking about the possible ways that they could have died and of course, vampires came immediately to mind, but I couldn't just come out and ask it.
That would have been rude.
"No, Willow, I'm all set on he drinks...wait, if you have something with a lot of caffeine, like maybe a mountain dew, I could probably go for it."
I was going against my whole mocha at night advice to her, but that was more to keep her off of the Sunnydale streets at night and now I had an inkling as to why she might not fear it, as to why she had mentioned stakes and holy water and crosses.
I still couldn't just come out and ask it, but I had to. The investigator in me pushing me forward.
"I'm very sorry about your parents, Willow? How did they die? If it isn't too painful for me to ask you about it."
I walked into the kitchen and made him a drink then returned to the front room just in time to hear him ask how my parents died. I wish it was something mundane like a car wreck or something, but no, they had to go out at night and get attacked.
I didn't want to tell him this it would only be more fuel for the being out at night is dangerous theory, but oh well, why hold back now.
"From what the police said, they seemed to be attacked with something like a barbcue fork, or something like that. They both had little holes in their necks. The police thought at first something bit them, but it didn't seem logical so they ruled it out and said it was a mugging with a barbcue fork. I know that isn't logical either, but yeah, thats what I was told."
I might as well have just said hey they were killed by vamps.
I wondered if I had I am with a secret government installation that hunts down vampires stamped on my forehead?
Initiative guy, here I am, yeah, that's me.
I was stunned. I gauged her reaction, to see what she thought of it all. Stakes, holy water, crosses was still in my head and now this.
I was tempted to ask her if the coroner's office had told her if the blood was drained or not, but then I would definitely be giving away that I KNEW what vampires were.
"Some kind of barbecue fork? Never heard of a murder with that kind of implement before?" I asked, and also stated, curiously.
"Hi Riley"

I said softly as I looked around careful to watch for any thing that might try to hurt us.
"I just live up the street, atleast for now anyway."
I muttered the last part, I didn't want to bother him with my woes.
"So, have you asked Buffy out yet?"
Ok way to go Willow, you are supposed to be subtle, instead you are like a bull in a china shop.

I said as a lame way of covering for myself. I really wanted him to ask me out, to have a chance with someone I related to, but Buffy was prettier.
"No, she hasn't said anything, I actually haven't talked to her. I have had meetings and packing to do."
Ok way to go, share too much as you walk Willow. Not that he won't find out when he reaches the house and sees all the boxes, but still...

I said softly as I opened the door and walked in Riley right behind me. Once we were inside I shut the door and turned back to him.
"I am the only one who lives here. My parents were killed last year."
I finally told him as I slid some boxes out of the way for him to be able to sit down.
"You want something to drink?"
I asked attempting to avoid the inevitable conversation that was coming about my parents.
