The Tale of Genji

One of my favourite Japan novels celebrates its 1000 anniversary!

Japan's "Perfect" Lover Celebrates 1000th Birthday

I love ancient and modern Japanese literature - Murasaki Shikibu, Basho, 'The Pillow Book' by Sei Shonagon, 'Kokin Wakashu', and then Akutagawa, Koba Abe, Yasunari Kavabata, Kenzaburo Oe, and detective writers like Edogava Rampo...

It's just so ... far-away-from-anything-I-usually-read, it's like jazz variations with letters. As I recall 'The Pillow Book' was my first obsession - the book was given to my sister as a birthday gift, but she was able to read it several years later :-)

And 'The tale of Genji' - oh, Genji! I was in love with him, i even bought English translation in a small London secondhand bookshop, cause i couldn't find full version in Russian :-)
