I managed to wrangle myself my first real paying commission.
A friend of mine wanted me to paint a portrait of Darth Maul from Episode I of Star Wars and young Obi-Wan Kenobi for her boyfriend for Christmas.
I wasn't too sure I could do it actually. I mean, I'm an okay painter but drawing/sketching is really my comfort zone.
I decided that I could at least try to do it and if it sucked, it sucked.
She bought the canvases and a little set of acrylics so I could do it.
I didn't start immediately. I'm a known procrastinator. However, after a day I found myself actually wanting to start the paintings. That rarely ever happens.
At this point, I found out that my friend Beth was going to come over for a couple of days and I really wanted to give her something for Christmas. I decided to give her a painting.
I knew I was pushing my time limit for all of the paintings but I figured I could do it.
Luckily, I managed to get not only Beth's done but also the painting of Obi-Wan done as well.
So the next day I painted Darth Maul and I was immensely pleased with the outcome of all the paintings.
I guess all of this means that I somewhat doubt my abilities more than I realized.
I have never thought myself an exceptional artist.
I think that is what most artists/creative persons think of themselves.
Now that I've actually accomplished something artistically, I feel both relieved and excited to begin my next artistic venture. :)
