Hockey night in Ottawa

This town is hockey mad.

I have never noticed hockey madness in other places I've lived so much as here. Well, to be fair, I can understand the difficulty in getting excited about Junior A hockey in rural Nova Scotia, (unless you have a crush on the backup goalie). And I never really paid attention in Halifax.

There are hockey fans in Toronto. But in Toronto there are at least two kinds of people: those who love the Leafs, and those who don't care about hockey. In Ottawa right now, there are also two kinds of people. Those who love the Sens, and those who love the Leafs.

Playoff angst is abundant here. At work everyone talks about hockey--it's become war between two supervisors, fans of opposite teams. The papers are filled with Stanley Cup coverage. I overhear it in conversations everywhere. And I can't ignore the little car penants carpeting the city. Particularly the one SUV I saw with the giant T-bar mounted in the front and the three-and-a-half foot high Senators banners obstructing the view through his windshield.

I admit to enjoying it, though. I've only seen Ottawa get this excited about one other thing.

The beginning of winter.
