today julie (really sweet girl from the philippines who's in 2 of my classes and lives on the same floor as me, yay!) and i went to akihabara! for, like, 8 hours. wow.

for those of you who don't know, akihabara (aka "the electric city") is, like, the geek capital of the world. the stores are filled either with endless amounts of expensive electronic goods or anime/comic books/video games/etc. (it's also home to the gamers store, which i'm sure you know if you know what the gamers store is.... *thinks of dejiko and gemagema chanting "akihabara!!" "gema!" "akihabara!" "gema!"... okay, i'm done now.*) and, on the weekends, the streets are closed to allow for better shopping. ^_^

it was pretty much what we expected it would be, really. massive amounts of cell phones and ipods and digital cameras and dvd players and laptops and electronic dictionaries and pretty much any other electronic gadget you can imagine. lots of really geeky people. a LOT more men than women. also, more girls dressed up as maids than i've ever seen before, even at animazement.... we felt kinda sorry for them, that's a pretty sucky job, dressing up as a maid so you can hand out flyers to geeky men who are not-so-subtly ogling you... i hope it at least pays well. also, a very annoying large amount of people stared at me. i mean, come on, if someone is walking down the streets in cosplay, they have NO right to stare at ME! my whiteness is totally less weird than their cosplaying!

we went into a lot of the stores, and i had plenty of geeky moments, several of those involving sexy rei ayanami figurines... ^_^;; also, the ufo catcher machines took much of our money (they had gloomy bears in a ufo catcher!! i wanted one so badly!!)

perhaps the coolest thing in my mind was what appeared to be a wadaiko video game... it was a little like ddr, but instead of stepping on arrows you hit drums. to super mario music. oh, japan.

we did go into gamers, all 8 floors of it... i really hadn't realized how BIG it was. and packed with anime. surprisingly, neither julie or i really wanted anything, although we fangirled about a lot of it (especially the yaoi... 'cause julie is apparently a yaoi fan! yay!!!) (and yes, fangirled IS a verb.)

we were determined to buy something, but couldn't find anything we really wanted in terms of anime-geekdom or cool electronic gadgets... so she bought a rice cooker and i bought a toaster oven. yes, we went to akihabara and came back with kitchen appliances. oh, well... we might lose some geek points, but at least we can eat more yummy food now!

it was really fun to hang out with her, i hope we spend more time together as the year goes on. i think we have plans to go to kichijouji sometime this week, so yay!

so, yeah, pictures!

a robot welcoming us as we come in... (translation reads: Hello! Welcome to Akihabara!"

lots of shops and people

gamers!!

all the geeks crowding around to watch a girl sing karaoke

all lit up at night...
