Title: Secrets and Lies

03. Claudine has always known that she and Danny could never really, seriously work out. She’s been trying to one-up Lauren from the beginning, fighting for her prize. And maybe it turned into something, maybe she does love him, but that isn’t going to be enough.
Because Claudine keeps too many secrets, and Danny tells too many lies, and they can’t seem to work out how to meet in the middle over even the littlest of issues. You can’t build a life on pet names, snark, and fuck and make up routines. She supposes it just isn’t meant to be.

04. Lauren is sweet like syrup. Lauren sings like an angel. Lauren dances gracefully despite her lack of training. Lauren is the kind of pretty that attracts nice boys, full of charm and smiles and good intentions. Lauren’s got it all.
Lauren wants to be Claudine.
Claudine may be bitchy, but she knows how to get her way. Claudine sings like her soul is behind it. Claudine has the training, has the style, has the grace to make a name for herself in dancing. Claudine is thin as a wisp, hot.
Sometimes at night, Lauren wishes she had Claudine’s drive.

05. Lauren does not regret loving Danny. She doesn’t regret falling head over heels for him in her first week, she doesn’t regret losing her virginity to him. But she does regret holding on long after she knew her claim to him was lost. She does regret fighting tooth and nail for an affection she should have realized he didn’t have for her anymore. Maybe things could have worked out better for one of them if she hadn’t wanted to mess it up for Claudine.
But that’s her little secret, because she said she wouldn’t change anything about the year.

06. Danny was a closet romantic. He bought Lauren flowers, slipped sappy cards under her door for no reason, and played love songs for her on the piano when no one else was around. Just because he wanted to. Because he liked making her smile.
When they started dating, he did the same for Claudine. Maybe that was his first mistake, because Claudine got used to it. Now she pouts if there isn’t a card waiting for her in the morning, a flower for her at the table.
Danny’s keeps it his dirty secret that he doesn’t enjoy it anymore.

Some days Danny walks with a limp. Those are the days he dances best. A spring in his step, a smile on his face, every movement fueled by joy and unmatched grace. Days like that, Jez watches him with a smile.
For every day that Danny walks with a limp, he walks two with a board straight back and easy steps. Those are the days he dances worst. Mechanical movements, a grim set about his mouth, no passion surging just beneath his skin. Those days, Jez doesn’t like to watch him. But those days, Jez always takes him aside.
