About posting fics

Jan 09, 2010 09:50

Okay, seriously. Two things about posting fics (probably not directed to anyone actually on my friends list, but I've just gotta rant about it a little), because now it's been happening over and over again and it's getting on my nerves.

Cutting. Got longish. )

ranty rant

Oh, I completely agree. I've honestly given up on stories because of this, especially in bigger communities like snape_potter and the like used to be a few years ago. I don't know how busy they are now, but back then it was impossible to find another chapter, especially before tags came in. I belive that may have been part of why pornish just banned chaptered fics when that community was created.

I wish more comms would have stricter rules about chaptered fics. (Tbh, I wish they'd have stricter rules about a whole lot of things - for example, fic comms without tags *headdesk*) I've recently started reading HIMYM fic at himym_fic and they only have pairings and character tags, no author tags. Makes it nigh on impossible to find previous chapters unless linked or tagged in the poster's own journal.

Pornish doesn't allow chaptered fics? Well, I guess it works for that kind of comm ^^ Haven't watched that in forever, though (I'm not much for PWPs).

Oh gawd, that does suck. :/ I don't know the series at all, but yeah. if you want fic, you don't want to have to deal with that crap.

Pornish never allowed chaptered fics, though they may have relaxed their rules after switchknife left and they moved to IJ. I haven't followed the comm in ages, but I remember a particularly delightful ponyboy fic that everybody begged for a sequel for. The sequel couldn't be put on pornish despite *everybody* wanting to read it, because it classified as a sequel. :/

The series is a lot of fun. At least up through season 4. They've crapped all over season five *sigh* But Neil Patrick Harris is still eyecandy galore (see icon ^^).

I've gotten to the point where I'm almost thankful if the link points to ff.net. At least there, the chapters are in order (usually, but trust people to fuck that up too sometimes *eyeroll*).

And *g* That's funny ^^ Maybe a bit too hard a rule.

And I don't get it, because it's really not that hard to do any of the three ways I suggest... *sigh*

Hurrah! I wish everyone would follow these guidelines.

I often wait until a story is complete because I hate to get caught in WIP hell. Some authors are notable exceptions because I know the stories will get completed, but going back to find complete stories is often a nightmare for the rest.

I like tags and masterpost a lot, but I LOVE links backwards and forwards.

Am I an exception? :) And yeah, I'm the same way. I try only to read completed fics, because WIPs are so annoying.

I prefer the links back and forth too. But the others are options, if you really don't have the energy to do the others (you should, really, if you want people to read your stories). I've only used tags once, and that was on my mpreg LJ with the NCIS mpreg, because that's the only NCIS mpreg on there so it worked. Otherwise, I always do links backwards and forwards.

When you posted "Raft" I was refreshing my browser *waiting* for another chapter!!!

So, yes, I trust you to 1) finish the story and 2) keep me on pins and needles because I *have* to know what comes next!

On memories: they work the best if the chapter number is on each part. I've encountered stories all labeled "Great story" and even when you sort by date you often get them in the wrong order. If the chapters were labeled "Great Story 1/?" then I can figure out what comes next.

Links back and forth are also great because I can move through a story more quickly; without going back to a master post.

*g* Good to know :) It's easier to guarantee updates when the story is already finished. Also, much fun is to be had when holding it over poor unsuspecting readers' heads *evillaughter*

Oh, I'd forgotten about memories. I rarely use memories, but I guess that'd work too. But like you say, it has to be well sorted and labeled.

I totally agree! Ugh, the hell of unlinked chapters. It's like they don't even want you to read the story!

I know! Why bother posting, if no one can find your whole story without some serious detective work?

Thank you! I thought I was the only one frustrated by lack of chapter links, etc. I read whenever I can throughout the day and sometimes I just don't have the time (or a quick computer connection) to do lengthy searches.
