Star-Split Sky (Nothing)

Jan 19, 2005 04:07

It was late, so late that is was almost early.
We laid under the star-split sky
and for decades, it seemed, we talked (about nothing)
consciously, carefully evading something
that we’d want awkwardly secluded, because
for so long, too long
we were dreaming
and promising to take our secrets to the grave
all in the name of protection.
And so we laid under the star-slpit sky
chatting about (nothing)
music, marshmallows,
old lovers, and lucky numbers (nothing).
Above, the stars danced.
These games are nothing new, games built for
us.
But then,
the event came.
Neglected by the world (that was silent, slumbering, and
oblivious that the world was falling down all around us
and melting since midnight)
We discussed love (that we could never share)
Affirming everything.
Finally, we spoke of something
but
by then
it was so late, so late it was almost early.
And so we sat under the star-split sky
both speaking of dreaming
both pondering what was waking
beyond the fireflies
that would disappear into the morning.
