Whitney Houston

She had me at hello.  I was about three years old at a horse race track in NJ with my mama in some sort of coat store with all these fur coats everywhere.  And a song came on the radio, "Saving All My Love for You."  And...it was a wrap.  No, I didn't know she was singing about being "the other woman", nor did I give a damn.  She was just so amazing to listen to and she got me young and got me good.  I'm ride or die with Whitney.  One of my favorite birthday gifts was my uncle giving me nosebleed seats when she came to Columbia on her "I'm Your Baby Tonight" tour.  She was nothing but a blue dot on stage but you couldn't tell my nine-year-old self nothing.

Her new album is streaming on her Web site.  On the whole, I like it.  I think it's a little schmaltzy on some tracks, but she burst out in the 80s, and given what she's been going through....I think she has the right to be.  She still has one of the best voices ever and I weep, nay, I heave body-racking sobs for what "singers" are nowadays.  Right now my favorite track is the first one, but I can't wait until next Tuesday so I can have it in my hands.

singing, childhood, good things
