This Is Your Nation on White Privilege This part especially
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look.”
Because all the grief black people have gotten for "voting for Obama simply because he's black", and no similar grief for white women voting for Palin because she has the same lady parts really grates my nerves. At least I can say that the people on my flist who are excited about Palin are not excited by Palin because she has a uterus--they agree on what she stands for--but the media is all about how Palin's addition to the ticket will get that "key" demographic of white women blah blah blah.
But black people can't vote for the black man just because he's black.
o.O
Ultimately, people can vote however the frick they want. That's part and parcel of this being a democracy. And trust me, if black people only wanted a black president, Al Sharpton would've had a much better shot than the few votes he ot when he sought the nomination. Trust me, black people can be MUCH MORE critical about one of us succeeding on the national scale because
Black people are well aware of how this country perceives us--3x better to be considered equal (or less than, considering the conversations about Palin v. Obama); you represent EVERYBODY (and by everybody, I mean the worst); what you say/think obviously represents how a diverse group of people in one race thinks; and there is a higher standard of "Americanism" which PoC, but particularly
black people have to meet, before they're even considered good enough to live in said country, let alone be considered a citizen or president. Or at least that's the vibe I'm getting from the "liberal" MSM.
A gem for you that underscores the previous paragraph.
But also, the MSM keeps forgetting this contest is not against a black man and a white woman; it is against a half black man and a white man. But if people don't think the whole "Must protect gorgeous white woman from boogeyman half black man" isn't affecting some voters are incredibly naive.
But, I will say I can't wait for the debates. They should be much more Interesting than Cheney/Edwards.
