Title: Hope
Pairing: Changmin/Sooyoung
Rating: G
Genre: Fluff
The year has ended but the world didn't.
Changmin is disappointed. He has already prepared himself for the spectacle of earthquakes pushing cities into an endless abyss, giant waves sweeping continents, and meteors falling from the high heavens splattering metallic specks of doom as they draw fiery lines across the horizon.
His mind is twisted like that; much to Yunho's chagrin.
Instead, all he gets is a lame countdown to the new year while standing in the middle of a throng of idols during a year-end ceremony. He doesn't show his disappointment, of course, even when their manager ushers them to a private SMtown gathering after the show.
Two hours and three bottles of wine after, Changmin finds himself standing outside the building staring at the smoky aftereffects of a firework-battered sky. A sneeze and a breathy 'excuse me' catches his ear and he whips his head around only to see the person he had always least expected to spend some alone time with --- may it be accidental or not.
Sooyoung stands just outside the door; her flowing dress and lithe arms doing nothing much to protect her from the cold January air.
It must be the wine, he passes the blame as he scoots wordlessly in her direction; announcing his presence quite prudely by draping his coat over her shoulders.
Her soft gasp basically summarizes the rest of what she wanted to say. 'Sorry, I didn't see you there Changmin-ssi.'
'You're cold.' He states simply, arms never leaving the slender stretch of her back.
She stares at him with big, questioning eyes. He stares back. The silence consumes them but the absence of words and the language of the eyes pretty much makes up for what should have been said long ago but was never done.
'Hi, Sooyoung.' A shadow of a smile graces his lips as he observes the myriad of emotions reflected in her eyes --- confusion, understanding, acceptance. 'We never really had time to know each other well, didn't we?'
'Well...' She gifts him with that blinding smile that is distinctly hers, '...it's never too late to start. Happy new year, Changmi---' The sudden gust of wind had her looking up. He follows her line of vision and a soft 'oh' escapes his lips when he sees the tiny green-leafed plant swaying gracefully with the breeze.
There are no earthquakes, tidal waves, and falling meteors but Changmin swears he felt the world tremble, sweeping him off his feet as stars burst in a joyous dance inside his head, when her lips touch his. He curses his twisted way of thinking --- years of subtle avoidance with the girl in front of him, only to end up helpless (and breathless) under her touch.
The kiss ends much too abruptly, in his opinion. The faintest tinge of pink colors Sooyoung's cheek, as if she is suddenly shy of what she had done. Her cheeks burn a shade darker as he keeps his gaze on her, renowned smirk in place as he coolly phrases his next statement.
'Seems like they missed this one out when they took away the Christmas decorations.'
'Who put that mistletoe there, anyway?' She avoids his eyes but his hand on her chin keeps her in place.
'Does it matter?'
He wraps his arms around her tiny waist this time. The absence of the overused fireworks display and background music is not a problem as Changmin scoops her up for a second (third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventeenth) kiss.
The year has ended but the world didn't. And Changmin wonders why the hell was he so disappointed about it in the first place, anyway.
