//Happy New Year, Sooyoungie//
A few hours short before the start of the ‘end of the world’ yet Sooyoung was still staring at her hand phone looking as if the thing would turn into a piece of kimbap at any moment. The silly smile stubbornly plastered on her face still won’t come off despite the many ticking minutes that have passed after she read that message.
To say that the passing year is a year of memorable things would be an understatement. It was a milestone year, to say the least. Been to new places, performed on different parts of the globe, released an international album with her group, made new friendships, got into a car accident…
Quite a handful. Though the last two might as well be counted as one.
//Happy New Year too, Kyu-oppa. Don’t you think your greetings are a bit too early? Keke ^^//
After four long ridiculous years of pretending that each other do not exist, here she is sending messages to Super Junior’s Cho Kyuhyun. Who would’ve thought that the seemingly impalpable wall of perpetual awkwardness they have between each other would eventually fall?
Guess all it took was a reminder of a past face-off with death for him and a broken coccyx for her.
Kyuhyun was, surprisingly, one of the first ten people to visit her after the accident. And that’s saying something considering the number of people swarming her when it happened. He brought with him to the hospital a basket of oranges and a shy smile. It was awkward at first. As usual. Silence stretching for minutes until Kyuhyun took out a bag of potato chips hidden beneath the fruits.
It was the first time she has laughed genuinely after the accident. It was the start of a long postponed friendship.
//Then I will greet you again when the clock strikes twelve. And then after that. So I’ll greet you early, on time, and late. Keke. How is it going there?//
She raised her head to check her surroundings and only then did she notice the ruckus that was happening around her. Yuri was doing last minute counting of the firecrackers she has successfully smuggled right under their manager’s nose. Tiffany was running berserk across the room followed by a crazy Yoona who looked just as eager to blow trumpets in the American girl’s ear. Seohyun was standing near the kitchen window, one hand on her ear in an attempt to block the noise as she continued with her hour-long talk with a certain CNBlue leader. Jessica was watching TV along with Sunny; both completely immersed to notice Taeyeon and Hyoyeon putting cucumber slices in the salad bowl.
//You wouldn’t want to know, oppa. Keke//
She had barely clicked the sent button when Hyoyeon jumped into the seat next to her.
“Is that Kyuhyun-oppa?”
“Uh… Yeah.” Her head hung low in an effort to hide the flushed look on her face.
“Aigoo~” the older girl gushed before shouting at the top of her lungs. “GIRLS! SOOYOUNGIE AND KYU-OPPA ARE SENDING MESSAGES TO EACH OTHER!!!”
Her voice was barely heard over the commotion but there were few moments of silence before Taeyeon howled wildly and started banging the salad bowl with the metal spoon she was holding. Jessica lowered the volume of the television and gave her a meaningful smirk before plopping back into the sofa.
“You should confess tonight, Syoo.” Hyoyeon gave her a smile of support before she stood up and walked back to where she came from.
Sooyoung shook her head in disbelief, the stupid grin on her face a huge contradiction to what she was trying to make herself look like.
//Girls being their usual selves again? Keke. We’re eating now. Have you eaten yet?//
//Eat a lot of fruits, Sooyoungie.//
//It’s starting to get crazy here, too. Ara-noona is dancing Bonamana in front of the entire family. Haha//
//Are you eating now? Eat a lot but don’t eat too fast. ^^//
//Sooyoungie? Still there?//
10:30 PM
She finally managed to grab her phone after a very heavy feast with the rest of Sonyushidae. She blinked furiously at the amount text messages cramped in her inbox.
Most of which are from Kyuhyun.
//Oppa, I’m sorry for the late reply. We’ve just finished eating. I’m so full now~ keke//
//It’s nearly midnight now. Is Ara-unnie still dancing? Keke//
Her phone beeped and she dived towards it not noticing the teasing looks the rest of the girls were giving her. The excited look replaced by disappointment when the sender’s name turned out not to be the one she was waiting for.
11:24 PM
Three dozen more messages arrived and Sooyoung’s fingers were starting to ache from all the replying. She replied with utmost sincerity to all those who spared time to send her a message though half her heart remained blank as no Cho Kyuhyun waltzed his way into her inbox.
“Call him and get done with it.” The unsolicited advice came from a smiling Seohyun who was now sitting comfortably beside her.
“What?”
“Call him. You know you want to, unnie.” She beamed as she hugged her favorite stuffed Keroro. “I sometimes call Yonghwa, too.” The dreamy smile not leaving her face as she drifted into her own fantasy land.
The phone suddenly felt like a foreign object. She debated with herself for a while, which is incredibly stupid as she knew she’d end up following their maknae’s advice anyway, before she scrolled on his name. She pressed the call button, closed her eyes, and waited.
He answered on the seventh ring.
“Yeobseyo?”
Sooyoung wonders when will Kyuhyun’s voice stop sending her shivers.
"H-Hi! Happy New Year! Sorry it took me too late to reply. We were so busy here!”
On why her voice sounded like a squeak, she didn’t know. She was too immersed with his low laugh playing in her ear to care.
“It’s okay, Sooyoungie. Happy New Year too.”
She went on pondering whether her name will sound that good too coming from other people’s mouth.
“Yeah. Happy New Year again. Haha! How are you doing now?”
Sooyoung blabbed continuously, not minding if her sentence made any sense. Quite frankly, everything usually do not make sense when it’s between the both of them.
She saw Hyoyeon walked up to her from the corner of her eye carrying a huge paper with the word "CONFESS" scribbled messily across it. She rolled her eyes in an attempt to hide the fact that her heart was doing somersaults.
Kyuhyun was talking about the cold weather and something about peaches and Ddeok Mandu Guk but Sooyoung could understand nothing at the moment.
“Kyuhyun…”
He stopped in his sentence. The short pause was too heavy and her heart was punching the roof of her chest that the words jump out of her throat.
“I think I like you.”
She bit her lip, closed her eyes, and waited for a reply.
Nothing.
His steady breathing the only thing assuring her that he is still on the line.
“K-Kyu?”
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP
The line went dead.
Sooyoung stared frightfully at her handphone before throwing it carelessly on her side. She snatched the Keroro stuff toy from a disconcerted Seohyun and buried her head in shame. Her heart sinking faster than the remaining seconds of the dying year.
The fireworks display has started and Yoona, still unperturbed with the drama happening, squealed loud enough to catch the attention of the rest of the girls. One by one, they fled towards the window and watched the spectacle. A good enough segue to leave Sooyoung to collect her senses before cuss words fly.
The tall girl sat for a long while, letting the embarrassment fade before she stood up and dragged her feet to the buffet table. She was on her fifth plate of pasta when the doorbell rang.
It kept on ringing and ringing and ringing.
And it was only when Jessica’s dolphin squeal demanding someone to open the goddamn door got to her nerves that she stood up and walked towards it.
The door opened wide to reveal a panting Kyuhyun. His hair was stiff from the evening cold and his face looked like it could use some make-up.
“My fucking phone died.” He blurted as soon as she had a good view of him.
He crossed the distance between them and pulled her into a hug. She felt like laughing as she wondered why he didn’t simply charged the stupid phone but the warmth of his body against hers had drowned all other thoughts in her mind. She wrapped her arms around him. Never mind the damp air still sticking in to his clothes and the curious looks the girls are now giving the two of them.
"Syoo..."
He raised a hand towards her face, as if checking if she’s real, and kissed her.
The noise of the firecrackers from below the street paled in comparison to SNSD’s cheers. The kiss was broken when she failed to suppress the grin spreading on her face.
“What?”
He broke into a small laugh as a reply before he kissed her again.
“I like you, too.”
