Her fingers lingered for a moment on the latch. I was half-hoping she'd turn around and drop her bags on the floor.
But she didn't.
She walked out of the door; beneath the faded green-striped awning where we ran for cover the night the sky cried rivers; away from the creaking wooden stairway were we used to sit down and watch the afternoon sunlight stream through the leaves of the nearby trees; along the withering blue posies we've used to spent lazy Saturdays for; through the rusty gate.
(she didn't even bother closing it)
She walked on and I know she was fighting hard not to look back.
For to look back is to remember. And to remember is to return.
Return back to six years of dreams, laughter, and tears. Return back to the arms of the eight girls she has shared these to.
She has long been waiting for this day to come. We all know that this day will come.
The rest of the girls were pretending to be asleep but I know nobody slept a wink last night. Not when we know our leader is leaving. Our sister is leaving.
I watched as her little figure disappeared from view. A sigh is all I could give as I slowly closed the bedroom door and sat on my side of the bed.
The person on the other bed moved and I know Sica was pouring her agony silently from beneath her blanket.
But there's nothing much that we can do about her decision. She has given up much for a dream that she thought would make her happy. It's about time she receives the happiness that she rightfully deserves.
Be free, Taeng. Be free.
Two stubborn tears fell from my eyes without me knowing.
Goodbye, Taeng. Goodbye.
