On his bedside table were his prized possessions. Rows and rows of photographs. Of beautiful people and memories frozen for time. On the center most were two frames sitting beside each other. One, a family of four - beaming parents and two charming boys, a quiet-looking one and the other, smiling as if all the stars grew tired of clinging to the heavens and have decided to take their places in his eyes. The other family, thirteen gods on mortal form. They fit snugly on the frame like how they do in his heart.

He stared at a certain photograph beneath the window, partly-hidden by the flimsy curtain, a snapshot of himself not a year older than fourteen. The innocent glow on his face masked the sleepless nights and home sickened hours during his first year away from his sleepy hometown. Beside it was a mosaic of bright lights, entangled limbs, paradox of tear-stricken cheeks and blatant happiness, as the camera captured the moment of how grateful they all are for the small trophy wrapped in Eeteuk’s delicate fingers - a reminiscent of the night they all proved their worth to themselves as they receive their first award as a group. Pinned in the wall above that, is a large photograph of what looked like a sea of sapphire blue gems embroidered on black velvet, framed with cardboard heart-cutouts and bordered with his scrawny handwriting - the words E.L.F. and 사랑해powdered all over the edges.

The photograph, laden with the heavy borders he has carefully cut himself, leans slightly to the left, casting a shadow over a picture of a beautiful couple. Wind ruffling their hairs, eyes laughing, and fingers intertwined. Behind them stretched the blue, blue sea like paint spilt from the palette of a careless painter. Years later after that picture was taken, the sea took form as black ink carefully printed on paper to be forever carried as a legacy for an adorable boy: 동해. The little boy grew up in a home filled with love - evident on the series of photographs next to the picture: the lovely autumn afternoon when he first learned to walk, his sweet face for his first school ID, and the look of adoration plastered on his face as he hugged his elder brother on his birthday. Closest to the bed is a framed photograph of a man, still on the prime of his youth, and a boy. Tubes infuse the hand slung around the boy’s shoulder, but the man clad in a hospital gown took no notice of how awkward it might seem. His eyes transfixed on the smiling child as he gave him his last kiss.

Donghae looked at the picture and his vision blurred as a wave of melancholy washed over him.

“Dad.”
