To Whom It May Concern:
I am resigning from Con Edison due to my concerns of the CFR’s operating practices. I am not comfortable using screwdrivers to open doors the of customers who are not home. Nor am I willing to pull up a fence and crawl underneath in order to gain access to a bank of 50 meters. Often, when I have asked for assistance because I am behind on my route, I have been told to just “do your best”.
Not knowing who my shop steward is has also been difficult because I have had no one with whom I can discuss my concerns. When I make an entry on my PET device stating that there is no clear access, I am often told that what I describe is not a clear access problem. At this point my understanding of not having clear access has been limited to an area which has fleas, asbestos, or a flood, whereas the instructional card provided to me describes Clear Access as, “Safety is our top priority as Con Edison. The Clear Access Procedure states that employees must ensure that they have access from the point of entry to the assigned task, without any physical or environmental obstructions.” Clearly there are some major inconsistencies. For instance, I have been plagued by owners who tell me that their dog is locked up, but when I reach the meter, the animal is roaming free, exposing me to the possibility of being bitten.
The only assistance that I have received in the field was from a co-worker who I ran across by coincidence. Through these experiences I learned, what seems to me, unethical shortcuts which are necessary to complete a route and meet the norm. Climbing over garbage, picking locks, and destroying customers’ property, all to gain access to a meter, I view to be unsafe practices, and, I feel, exposes the company and myself to unnecessary liability.
Thank you for the opportunity to work for Con Edison. Perhaps, sometime in the future, if another position is available, I would be willing to consider the offer. At this time my sights are on furthering my education, possibly making me a better candidate for a different position in Con Edison.
Sincerely,
