The last three years have been so stressful my writing has been forced lower on my list of priorities. With that being said, it doesn't much look as if things will change terribly in the next few years which means I must figure out how to incorporate writing time amidst chaos

You're so right about the aging parent issue in our culture. Too often, it's all about shutting mom/dad/grandma/grandpa into some 'home' somewhere and then they're forgotten about until they die. I can't think of anything less pleasant.

Fortunately, my MIL has some funds which will allow her to have some degree of comfort, but it's a matter of husbanding her finances for a long-term situation. Of course, the SIL wants to maximize her inheritance, so she's definitly one who would opt for the shoving mom into a home. Sigh.

You're right, there needs to be more focus on this issue in the media and in the social media. As we live longer lives, too many of us will be living for decades post-retirement.

As for the knee, I really hope a replacement isn't in my future. At this point, if it's anything it'll be the repair for a meniscus tear if they don't make me live with it for awhile.

I feel for your other friend. The whole income/university outlay is certainly a fraught issue for those of us who had kids a little later in our lives. One of our sons qualifies for several grants and student loans, so that's an enormous help. Wading through that whole financial thing is challenging though.
