lesbian drama and hockey and Team Canada

So Mel asked me to go to her ball hockey game. She was playing her ex’s team. You know, that girl who dumped her on her birthday and has since taken up with some uber sketchy older butch who’s Hulk crossed with Zoe Bell but less awesome. Who was also there. We entertained the idea of making a mean sign but eventually decided against it. I did however send her a picture of a dead eagle mascot, since she was playing the Edmonton Eagles. To which she replied “this is why I love you” and I was happy to cheer her up, as well as to be there for her today.

The game was probably the most tense one I’ve ever witnessed. They were really evenly matched and everyone was playing great. I’ve never been so stressed ot over sports. It wasn’t wanting her to win, it was she just could not lose to the ex. What an insult that would be. Thank god, they tied. Mel made some epic saves, but of the two goals she let in, one came from a teammate. Burn. But it was not a loss.

Considering all the girls in the league know each other and a bunch of them have dated, this must happen a lot. I kept thinking about how weird that must be. What happens when your ex is trying to score a goal on you? When you steal the ball from a chick who dumped you? When you get checked by a girl you cheated on? It must be hard to keep your head in the game. Or maybe it’s easy, I don’t know how the athlete brain works.

So then while I was waiting for Mel to get out of the locker room, sure did see Sarah’s old team. I don’t know if she still plays for them, but awkward much? I tried to avoid them because I figured if she did see me, it’d totally throw off her game. What are the chances? Good, it turns out, since all the women’s teams play on the same night.

It was funny though, watching a completely amazing, well-played game. And then them. I showed Mel and said “See this, I watched this for 2 seasons” “Oh god. Poor you! I don’t even need to see them play, I can just tell by the gear! How did you survive?”. Mean I know, and it wasn’t bad when all I’d seen was the D League, but now that I’ve taken in a bunch of A League games (and AA for ice hockey), it just seems kind of sad. But you know, they try.

To celebrate the not losing, we went to get food and head to a park. But Mel locked her keys in the car. So we had a parking lot picnic that was surprisingly fun. When the AMA guy came, he saw her gear in the car and asked who played hockey. She said her and he sarcastically said “oh really, Team Canada?”. And she said “Uhm, yeah, actually.”

Awesome? I think so. Oh and then he kind of hit on her.
