My mom’s supposed best friend totally stood her up for lunch today. Just never showed up. I’m so pissed off. I don’t like this woman much anyway, she’s proved an incredibly unreliable friend in recent years, but what a bitch move. The lunch was the friend’s idea in the first place! And my mom turned Marsha and Maddy down for lunch because she already had those plans.
What sucks is it put a cloud onto her whole day. Which I totally understand, it’s a big thing to have happen in the middle of your 60th. Things went well otherwise, dinner was great, she really appreciated her presents and the show was amazing but I know it was still bothering her. I’m hoping the big party on Sunday makes it all better. It was a good birthday but she deserves better.
Rocky Horror Show? FANTASTIC. I was thinking of writing a review but I feel like pointing out any of the specific things that work so strongly about the show would dampen their impact. Things like how they show the security monitor, the freezer walk-in, what the laser gun does, a very different Dr. Scott, are all surprising and very effective in their very different incarnations on stage.
I will say that a couple of the performances are stand-out. Antonio is about ten times more incredible as Frank’n’Furter than I expected and I expected a lot. He really makes Frankie his own, it’s no Tim Curry imitation. And all that drag experience proves very helpful. The guy playing Brad was a really good singer, strongly showcased with the inclusion of the Brad’s solo. Rocky is modernized and well, incredibly attractive. The narrator is also a lot of fun.
I really liked the costumes. All the clothes reflected their original characters but with a very fresh perspective. I really appreciated that. There’s also a lot of effective use of silhouettes and the theatre space, plus a few surprising tricks.
It was audience participation night so I don’t know what difference that made. I talked to Antonio afterwards and he says the participation makes it a lot easier to perform.
I guess this did turn into a review. If you’re a fan of RHPS, go see it. It’s worth it. The show is playing until April 3rd.
I was able to get a picture for my mom of her with Antonio (sadly after he’d already taken the outfit off) and she was really happy about that as a commemoration of her birthday. Yay. She really, really enjoyed the show.
