Holiday song post #1: Christmas in Prison

Dec 09, 2008 17:21

I’m going to try to update my blog with some holiday music now that the season is upon us. We’ll see if I actually remember to, but here’s the first one anyway:

Emmy the Great ft. Lightspeed Champion - Christmas in Prison

I suggest you listen to the song before you read the rest of the post, because it may skew your view on it. Okay? Okay. I’ll wait.

*takes a sip of neocitran*

I sure wish this cold would go away.

*twiddles thumbs*

Okay, are you done?

So, it’s apparently a cover. Perhaps the rest of you know this and it’s just me who’s never heard it before. I liked it more when I looked at as the singer’s perspective of a lesbian relationship happening inside the prison. But since the original was written by a male, it’s actually the lovelorn plea of a man locked away who’s pining for his girl. But it’s still wonderful. And maybe I’ll view it as a girl missing a girl who’s on the outside. It’s really pretty, regardless. Enjoy!

Christmas In Prison
It was Christmas in prison
And the food was real good
We had turkey and pistols
Carved out of wood
And I dream of her always
Even when I don’t dream
Her name’s on my tongue
And her bloods in my stream

She reminds me of a chess game
With someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain
After a fire
Her heart is as big
As this whole goddamn jail
And she’s sweeter than saccharine
At a pharmacy sale

Wait awhile, eternity
Old mother nature’s got nothing on me
Come to me, run to me
Come to me, oh
It’s Christmas in prison
Don’t I just know

The search light in the big yard
goes round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes
Like dust in the sun
Its Christmas in prison
There’ll be music tonight
I'll probably get homesick
I love you, goodnight.

Wait awhile, eternity
Old mother nature’s got nothing on me
Oh come to me, run to me
Come to me, oh
It’s Christmas in prison
Don’t I just know
[I edited these, this is the Emmy version]
[Thanks muchly to Dav for the song link!]
