This year, instead of feeling depressed about Valentine's Day becausue i dont have a valentine to share it with, I have decided that I will spend it appreciating the relationships that I have with my frends and family. My mom told me the story about Saint Valentine. Here it is incase you were wondering about the history behind it:
In the third century in Rome, the emporer Claudius II was having a hard time getting young men to sign up to be in the military. He decide that it was because they were afraid of leaving their wives and children. To get them to sign up, he cancelled all marraiges and engagements in Rome. Valentine, who was a priest in Rome, decided to help young couples by marrying them illegally. When Claudius found out, he sentenced him to torture and execution. While in prison, Valentine, instead of writing letters to his loved ones about all of the horrible things going on in his life, he wrote letters telling them that he loved them and how much he appreciated their friendship.
The holiday later became more romanticized.
