Lots of great things have happened since Saturday. The film fest was fun. I saw Dig! and I, Zombi, for which I am too damn tired to provide links. Look them up though, they were good. We crashed after tripping all day and missed the party on Saturday and baked cookies for everyone who attended and was hung over on Sunday.
I spent the week in the east village, and now I want to live there. I think we can make it happen. The old man was in top form both nights. Merle Haggard was pretty amazing as well. Michael took me to the place where Abbie Hoffman used to buy egg creams. I got one and it was pretty good. I spent a bit of time going around with Michael and learning the subway system, so now I know how to get around and the city seems much less intimidating.
Monday night we were on the subway and I thought I saw someone scurrying away down a side tunnel. I mentioned it to Michael. "Mole people," he said. Did anyone else know about this? There are entire towns formed in the abandoned subway tunnels under New York City. They have power, they leech it somehow from the stations, and they watch television and use refrigerators and microwaves. This is fascinating to me.
I spent a lot of time in Tompkins Square Park and a bit of time in Washington Square Park.
Michael lives above a storefront mortuary. This idea is still very strange to me. On Tuesday morning we went downstairs to smoke cigarettes and we were standing there and a minivan pulled up. A Ford Windstar. Beige. And these five goombah-looking guys got out and started arguing. They were upset because a church had dug a grave on the wrong side. The husband and wife always slept with the wife on the right and the husband on the left, and that's how they wanted to be buried, and somehow this church had fucked it up, but they were blaming each other, whatever. They're arguing about all of this in completely stereotypical New York Accents though, which made the entire thing really funny. Then one of them said, "Awright, pull dat ting outta the back, Joey." And out of the back of the minivan they pulled a dead body, and hauled it up the stairs, and then it wasn't really funny anymore. They looked like the guys who show up at your house to move your stuff, and that's how they handled the corpse too. Also, the street was fairly crowded and I was the only one who paid any attention to what they were doing, even when they dropped the body and even though the bag wasn't closed all the way. I mean, they were clearly dislodging a corpse from a minivan. No one even looked though.
Heather came over tonight, and we talked so much that it got too late to watch the movie. We went to Paper Moon and smoked cigarettes and ate meat. Bacon, turkey and beef between the two of us. Meat is awesome.
This whole week has been pretty amazing.
Beverly, I am so proud of you. I can't wait until you come home. Hooray, New York!
If anyone wants to come and hang out any time in the next couple days, I don't have a job or anything so I'm just sort of sitting around not doing anything. Feel free to just stop by. Don't call, Bev's got the phone.
Goodnight.
