It is both odd and incongruous that Kadyrov, the son of a respected mufti who studied in the 1980s first at a madrasah in Bukhara and then at the Islamic University in Tashkent, should have grown up with such a rudimentary and flawed understanding of both Islamic dogma and ritual. In contrast to 20-year-old insurgent commanders who quote the Koran in flawless Arabic, he has never been known to quote verbatim from the Koran in public.
rferl Kadyrov daughter won a prize in Quranic recitation and his son was filmed while reciting verses before flying to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage .
I am sure also Ramzan knows Quran by heart .
The thing is, that he very well knows, he can't beat terrorists on a mere religious ground, when his interpretation, is so far from theirs .
And i think he doesn't want to give the idea of pure religious leader .
For the time being, his role is mainly social and political .
Having said that, Ramzan Kadyrov leadership is challenged on a daily basis by a variety of people : the Kremlin, the prime minister, the Russian people living in Moscow, the Russian people living in the other regions, the Russian people living in Chechnya, his people in Chchnya, heads of other regions and of the Northern Caucasus, FSB and GRU, Chechens living abroad, extremists, potential investors, foreign workers .
All these people look at Chechnya from different perspectives and ask for different things .
To these people Kadyrov owes concrete answers which may be different to a certain extent .
He must not and cannot please them all, but must offer solid plans .
And the sort of answers he must provide, cannot be given with a single interpretation of islam, at least not with the Wahabi one.
He must come to terms with the fact that compromise is the only solution to see a prosperous Chechnya .
For one who lives in the West or surrounded by non Muslim, compromise is the key .
The problem nowadays, is that scholars in Arab countries, particularly those who are in friendly terms with Kadyrov, like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, are stuck in an outdated Islam .
The exercise of Ijtihad, which is fundamental to give to our religion , that universality in space and time, which allows us to live in every place and era, without feeling backward, is missing among Arab scholars, and Western ones, do not dare to take steps by themselves .
So a Muslim, living in a multicultural ground, tries his best not to displease non Muslims and not go too far from the path .
Sometimes it ends up in a mess, like with the Christmas tree or the bowl saga, but it is inevitable .
We can't live isolated just because scholars in Arab lands, are not doing their duty .
