HELP!!! I really need some advice from everyone, especially all you cat-owners, and I hope you may be able to help. Since I last posted, I got a second cat. His name is Don Pedro and he’s a long-haired version of Nadia and is an incredibly sweet cat. HOWEVER, I don’t know what to do now, and I have been going crazy.
TO EXPLAIN…
When I first got Pedro, he sprayed several times and even peed in my bed, which was really horrible since he was not neutered yet. The vet warned me that since Pedro was 9-12 months old, he might continue to spray after neutering. Since the neutering, I’ve been keeping him separate from my other cat, on my closed in porch and I’ve just been trying to slowly integrate him back into the household. It seemed like everything was going well b/c I didn’t have any smells in the apt especially on the porch where he was staying. I started letting Pedro out on supervised time in the apt and I have noticed that he and Nadia play all the time and seem to really like each other. I have NOT let Pedro into my room and I keep that door closed; I do not want him to find his way to my bed and pee in there again! I bought a Feliway pheromone plug-in which seemed to make the two cats even mellower.
HOWEVER, last Tuesday eve, when I went into my room for a short period of time to dry my hair, closed the door and left Pedro alone w/ my other dog and cat. I came back out and Pedro was sitting at my door and I could smell the pee reeking off the walls. I thought, okay, I just need to supervise him for a LONG while, right, and not leave him alone unsupervised. Well, Friday night, at some point he peed all over my papasan chair which is on the porch where he is staying - I don’t know if it was during a moment when my other cat was playing with him or if he was on the porch by himself. I’ve tried cleaning the cushion by spraying massive amts of Nature’s Miracle on it and it hasn’t helped. Unless I can find a huge washing machine, I will likely have to throw the cushion away.
This morning, I noticed Pedro had peed again on the papasan cushion. I have no idea why this happened.
I’m afraid to integrate Pedro into the household with this constant pee. I don’t know what is necessarily setting him off. He has his own litter box and dishes and I’ve tried to make everything set up so that he has his own area to retreat back to. I’m pretty much at my wit’s end and I’m afraid I might have to find another home for Pedro. Is there something that I’m not doing with him that might stop his peeing? Has anybody had some experience with this, and if so, how have you worked with this? Or, do you think that Pedro may need to be in a one-pet household where he has no one to fight against for territorial claim of anything? Part of me just wants to give him up (to a home, not to a shelter, of course), while the other part of me is just depressed at the idea of giving him up.
Despite Pedro’s peeing, he is really the most laid-back, sweetest cat I’ve ever seen. My other cat Nadia is sweet, but Pedro purrs non-stop when you walk into the room. He walks right into your lap and just wants love. He coos like a pigeon in addition to meowing which is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard.
Any thoughts, suggestions?
