My mother has a Van Gogh calendar in her room. The image for this month is L'église d'Auvers-sur-Oise (The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise). I'd never seen it before, but from looking at it I was convinced it must have been painted toward the end of his life, when he was losing his grip--it almost looks like a haunted house. Turns out that I was right: he moved to Auvers-sur-Oise just a few months before he killed himself.

(We have an old Time-Life book on mental illness which has a section on Van Gogh, showing the changes in his paintings as his mental illness worsened. It's interesting how it manifested itself in his art.)
