I had a weird exchange with someone last week. We were at a club which had a platter of free cake (it's a strange club) and I declined a piece.
"You don't eat cake?" she asked.
"I do," I said, "but I don't like bakery cake."
"So every time you eat cake it's homemade?"
"..."
I couldn't explain to her in a minute in that noisy club about the Orthodox community I grew up in and its baking fetish, and how overfrosted cakes made with off-brand Crisco and not enough egg (like bakery cake from any not-gourmet bakery) just can't compare to the sometimes-dumpy looking things that come out of real people's kitchens.
