Hey....look. Not only am I back online, but I have completed chapter seven of my story.
It's good enough. Maybe I can finish another chapter over the summer.
Of course, once I finally do complete all of the chapters, I am going to take a red pen to them and show them no mercy. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Anyway, enjoy.
Karen’s head appeared around the doorway. She smiled at Gerald and then looked angrily at Sicin. Gerald felt much better in just seeing her. He smiled as she walked in and leaned against the doorway. She was looking at Sicin, trying to decide what she would say. Gerald knew that Sicin was just going to look right back, and he felt a little embarrassed about the entire situation.
“Need some help?” she asked rather kindly.
Sicin scowled and then looked over at Gerald and the younger man noticed a hint of amusement on the Wolf’s face. “Where’s Taaena?” the Daimen asked.
She looked back out into the hall area for a moment. “I think he’s still occupied in the other end of this place.” She paused and looked back at Sicin. “You know, when you don’t yell at him, he’s easily distracted by flattery.”
“I am glad to see that you are not harmed, Lady Karen,” Gerald spoke quickly, interrupting whatever Sicin had been about to say in his native language. “I am terribly sorry about earlier...”
“What are you apologizing for?” she interrupted. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”
“That’s not what I meant, my lady.” Gerald was sure his face had reddened slightly.
“I have nothing to apologize for,” Sicin said, furthering Gerald’s embarrassment. The Daimen gave a quick jerk of his arms, pulling both of them free from the restraints. “And I don’t need help.”
“Except for from your own charm,” she said wryly.
“Then,” Sicin glanced at Gerald, “use your helpfulness to find my sword and his staff, and tell us if Taaena is coming.”
Gerald was not sure what to say, and he very much wanted to say something. Words that usually came so easily to him were getting jumbled in his head. It also did not help that Sicin would keep looking at him as if something was funny. It made him feel even more embarrassed. He could not figure out why. It was the feeling that he got from her. It reminded him of...Sicin accepted her help?
“I don’t know if I can reach them,” Karen was saying.
“Whatever,” Sicin sighed. “The sooner we get our stuff the sooner we can leave.”
“Yes, we. I’ll be back.”
He watched as she turned and walked out of the room. With her leaving, Gerald could feel the pull of time increase. She was a center. That was what kept jumbling him. At least, he thought that was it. Karen definitely had an affect on keeping him focused. It was very similar to the way his staff worked, and even more so to Sicin. Like Sicin, she could get him worked up without even trying. Except, there was just something more to her. Just her being in the same room helped his control, and at the same time ruined it completely.
“You like her,” Sicin said softly, and Gerald flinched.
The younger man had to close his eyes and take a few deep breaths to calm himself down. He could feel Sicin working at the restraints on his hands and sighed at his own distractedness. Somehow the Wolf had gotten completely free and next to him and he had not even noticed. Still, having Sicin close helped him keep his mind.
“Wait, what?” Gerald blinked as he finally realized what Sicin had said. “What did you mean by that?”
Sicin looked at him and raised an eyebrow. “You understood me perfectly,” he said.
“What, no, I mean...” Gerald stammered.
He sighed in frustration with himself as he felt his hands come free and he began massaging his wrists. The Wolf moved and began to carefully pull at the vines wrapped around his ankles. Yes, she was cute, but he was just being polite. Sicin would not tease him about liking someone, but that was not the problem. Gerald paused and looked up as he felt Karen enter the room before she did. What was it then?
“Here,” Karen said as she set down Gerald’s staff next to him as he thanked her. She turned to Sicin. “Taaena is still occupied as far as I can tell. Your sword is on a pretty high shelf in what I think is the front room.”
“Keep a watch on Taaena,” Sicin said.
“And what if he does something?” Karen asked.
“Then tell me,” Sicin said dryly. “Either that or get my sword.”
“Si,” Gerald said softly as Karen gave the Wolf a long glare.
“Don’t blame me if it falls,” she said irately.
The Daimen looked at the girl with little expression. Gerald looked at his friend and noticed a slight twist of humor and irritation on the man’s face. Sicin turned from the girl and began working on the vines around Gerald’s feet again. The human moved his hand to begin apologizing to Karen, but she was already leaving. Her brown braided hair whipped furiously as she stalked around the corner. He put his head into his hands as time washed around him when she left.
After a few deep breaths, Gerald reached down and grabbed his staff. His fingers rubbed over the symbols carved into the hard wood as he moved his feet. Sicin let go of the vine and then looked at the human. Gerald glared.
“What?” Sicin said calmly.
Gerald pushed himself upright and teetered a little bit as his head tried to catch up with the speed of his movement. Sicin was up and next to him, gripping his arm.
“You should know better than to stand that quickly,” the Wolf said.
“You should....”
“Why?” Sicin interrupted. “What is it really?”
The younger man sighed. “Her magic is like that of a center,” he told Sicin. “It is hard to discern unless she is close.”
“It affects you?” the Wolf asked.
“The pull is not as great.” Gerald looked at his friend questioningly.
Sicin looked thoughtful for a moment and then perked his ears up. The Wolf released Gerald’s arm and quickly spun toward the door. Gerald moved to catch up as the grey tail disappeared into the hallway. The human heard it as he ran after Sicin. Taaena’s dual voice was picking up volume.
He ran into Sicin as the Daimen suddenly stopped in an entryway. He could see Taaena over Sicin’s shoulder. The large creature held Karen in one arm and was disjointedly telling her to sing along with him. Sicin reached an arm back and pulled Gerald around next to him. The Daimen’s grey eyes darted around the room and then he whispered into Gerald’s ear.
“I’m going to grab my sword.”
“What about....”
“Don’t worry,” Sicin interrupted. “You’re going to take her advice.” When Gerald cocked an eyebrow the Wolf leaned closer. “You’re the diplomat. Use that training to get him to move us to the northeast boarder.”
“What if...”
“I trust your ability.”
She had given up struggling when moss monkey started singing. She could not even tell what was going on until Taaena stopped singing in her face. Karen felt like a cartoon character that had a loud horn blasted in front of them. Her eyes went a little crossed as the arm holding her jerked suddenly.
Moss monkey was either singing or talking in his odd, dual voice. She really could not tell the difference. Not like the difference mattered when it was in your face. After confirming that her brain was not oozing out of her ears, Karen tried to look around. She could not see Sicin anywhere. Unless he was directly behind her, he had probably ditched her.
Some hero. He was going to pay. She had tried to be nice and forgiving earlier. After all, he had been trying to save Gerald from being choked. She could be understanding with that, but this would be unforgivable. She had even done some playful banter. But, if he left her, she was going to write him into some horrible and embarrassing situation. Karen glared angrily at a movement in front of Taaena and spotted Gerald.
“Truly you have a skill in song that is beyond any I have heard.” The man’s tonality and the way he held himself showed a charm Karen had not noticed before. “I have heard many sing before, but none compares to the ability that you display.”
What was he do....woah! She felt herself jump as something grabbed one of her legs. The hand remained firmly grasped for a moment and then it let go as she stopped pulling against it. If Gerald was talking to Taaena, then it had to be Sicin who was underneath her. So he did not leave her. She had no idea what his plan was, but she was going to trust him. This was her dream and her hero.
His arm brushed against her legs and Karen found that she was not paying any attention to Gerald and Taaena anymore. How in the world was he planning on getting her free? His hand rested on the small of her back, right underneath Taaena’s hand. Karen tensed a lot. How about that. She was ticklish in her dream. She could feel Taaena beginning to move his arm backwards. It was just a little, like prepping for a swing. Then his hand opened and she fell.
Karen pulled her arms to her chest and felt bug-eyed. She did not hit the ground. Instead, Sicin’s hands gently caught her and she found herself cradled in his arms. He had a brief look of surprised confusion on his face before it was replaced by serious concentration. He moved slowly backwards, still holding her in his arms as he took quiet steps. And she continued to stare at him.
He was good looking with strong, sharp features. His grey eyes had a little bit of yellow ringing the edges and they watched Taaena intently. He was her hero, and she was finding this really awkward. As much as she had fantasized about being in his arms and things like that, it was just weird actually being in them. Especially because she did not feel like she belonged in them. There was a shift somewhere in her feelings that she could not figure out. Something had changed, but she did not know what it was.
Sicin jumped backwards without warning, but it was a fluid motion. Karen did not even react until she could feel the rush of Taaena’s hand barely missing them both, then she clung to Sicin. The Wolf did not even change his expression the entire time. His intense eyes remained locked on the two others in the room. He took two more steps back and then leaned his head close to Karen.
“Get behind me,” he whispered as he helped her to a standing position. “Hold on tightly and don’t let go until I tell you it’s safe.”
She nodded wordlessly and went around. Hold on to what? His waist? His tail? Behind him she saw his plain scabbard strapped across his back. Being the least awkward thing, Karen grabbed the strap with both hands and held tightly. She tried not to shift or fidget anything too much, but Sicin did not seem fazed either way.
Karen peered over Sicin’s shoulder and looked over at Taaena and Gerald. The young man was talking to the exuberantly singing giant. At least he had to be talking. Gerald was somehow managing to speak so rapidly that it sounded like his words were doubling up. Much like how Taaena spoke. The human was encouraging Taaena’s singing and wild gestures all the while avoiding them as he slowly began to walk the border of the room toward Sicin and Karen.
Then Taaena turned and pointed a hand at the Wolf. He began yelling something while Sicin quickly beckoned Gerald to him. Gerald moved with surprising speed and as he neared them the air around them began to sparkling. Karen found herself lifted off her feet a little as Sicin reached for Gerald, grabbing the younger man and pulling him close. Gerald’s blue eyes looked at Karen for a moment before everything became a swirling pain of color.
It was one of the more unusual sensations Karen had never thought of before. It felt like so many different things at once it was almost sickening. She felt like she was going nowhere real quickly. A merry-go-round on caffeine came to mind and she reminded herself to tell her roommates about that. They would find it funny, and maybe she would once this was over. Karen could not even tell if she was still holding on because everything was a dizzying blur and she was losing all the feeling in her body.
Her body jerked and she found herself completely without balance. Someone caught her arm as her legs gave out completely. They lowered her down and she closed her eyes tightly as she felt cool earth beneath her body. As far as Karen was concerned, she would throw-up the moment she discerned which way was up. Her insides were still trying to catch up with whatever had just happened.
“Can you stand?” Sicin asked.
“Yes,” Gerald’s voice was shaky, “I think so. I...Woah!”
The thud provided a better answer than any verbal response. It sounded like Sicin had not even tried to catch him. A foot nudged her’s and Karen opened her eyes long enough to confirm that her inner ear was still dancing.
“How about you?” Sicin asked.
“Stop the world please,” Karen said pitifully, not caring, “I’d like to get off.”
There was half a chuckle and then an annoyed sigh. “We need to get over the border. You can be sick over there.”
“Give me 6 minutes and I’ll be good,” Gerald said in between gasps of air.
The only person unaffected by whatever had happened snorted and Karen could hear him walking around. After a moment she could hear Gerald muttering something.
“We don’t have time,” Sicin said calmly. “Taaena is inconsistent at best.”
Sicin stopped next to Karen and she heard him land heavily on his knees in the dirt next to her. The Wolf’s hands quickly moved under her and Karen found herself lifted off the ground. After a moment she was shifted so that he could carry her in one arm. Sicin struggled a little to stand and Karen heard Gerald insisting that he could walk. Sicin was carrying both of them.
“It’s not far,” Sicin said, still sounding calm though a little out of breath, “so neither of you better heave on me.”
“You’re enjoying this,” Gerald said softly.
“You both should be unconscious. Spare my ears.” The sharpness at the end brought silence as they left the dogiymid’s domain.
