Webcomics Round-Up

I'm always talking about how I'm a big fan of webcomics, but I notice I haven't really talked about any (aside from inklings of my own) here or anywhere. I haven't talked about webcomics since 2004, apparently! Well, that ends here.

One thing: a handful of these are not safe for work and have been marked as such. Currently I do not mark comics as NSFW if they illustrate naked anatomy sometimes or passionate kissing. Also, I've yet to go through to put trigger warnings (if there are any) - working on it.

Last Updated: 20 June 2011 22 Sept 2011

The Abominable Charles Christopher: The Abominable Snowman and his forest friends.

The Adventures of Superhero Girl: Just what it says on the box.

Axe Cop: The most amazing thing on the internet. Written by a child and illustrated by his professional artist big brother, about exactly what the title says - an axe cop.

Batman and Sons: Not often updated, but when it is, it's hilarious - if you love the Justice League, especially Batman.

Carpe Chaos: Five alien races learn to travel between stars. Focuses on the ways their cultures collide and how they work to solve their problems.

Catena Manor: Honestly, I've fallen behind on reading this comic, but I followed it for years and liked what I read. Anthro animal slice of life.

Chester 5000XYV: NSFW! Hasn't updated in a while, but the archives are still a sexy treat. A comic about a sex robot, his inventor, the inventor's wife, and with no dialogue whatsoever.

Clans of the Cats: Another comic I've fallen behind on (I swear, you look away for a month or two and suddenly it's like you've missed five epic story arcs). Witchcraft and legacies and snarky talking cats.

Cleopatra in Spaaace!: Just what the title says. :)

Curvy: NSFW! An average girl gets caught up with a candy princess and has sexy adventures.

Derelict: Dang Thu Mai is a lone scavenger living on a boat and coping with her post-flood surroundings.

The Dreamer: A teenager dreams she's someone in the American Revolution.

Dreamless: An English woman and Japanese man dream of each other when they sleep. Set in WWII.

Dumbing of Age: Characters from Willis' It's Walky!, Roomies and Shortpacked! are all in college in an AU where the aliens never invaded. I've been following this guy's work for almost ten years of my life.

Eerie Cuties: A high school for supernaturals, centered on two vampire sisters, a succubus and a melusine.

Family Man: From the creator of Bite Me, which should tell you something about the nature of this comic, and if it doesn't, well, let me just say: it's hilarious and full of history.

Faux Pas: A wild vixen tries to make sense of domesticated animals living with humans.

Finder: It's hard to describe the world of Finder. The creator describes it as "aboriginal science fiction," and that's probably as close as one can get in as many words. Currently publishing the pages for "Torch".

Flipside: A jester girl and her bodyguard girlfriend set off on a quest to find someone.

Four King Hell: SAILOR MOON. Thanks to sailorem for this one, because it is SO GREAT and involves my favorite fandom things: pairing the Four Kings with the Four Senshi.

FreakAngels: All I have to say is -- this is Warren Ellis' webcomic.

Garden Hose: NSFW! The lives and observations of a dominatrix and her friends. On hiatus while creator handles health issues.

Girls With Slingshots: I've been following this comic since its first update. A group of friends navigating life, with a nice range of perspectives.

Goodbye Chains: Con artist and Communist in the American Wild West.

Grim Tales from Down Below: Primarily based upon the cartoon show "The Grim Tales of Billy and Mandy," which I've never seen before, but it gives enough background for you to follow along. Besides, when they visited Halloween Town to meet Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, I didn't need any background for that.

Guilded Age: The recovered WoW addict within me greatly enjoys this comic. You probably will too, if you like a humorous take on fantasy RPGs, D&D, etc. It's also funny fantasy comic regardless of whether you have that background.

Gunnerkrigg Court: Very well-written and well-drawn fantasy comic about two girls in a school, and the ongoing conflict between Nature and Science. The character design for Coyote is probably my favorite thing in the world.

Hark! A Vagrant: The funniest doodles about history and mythology ever.

I Was Kidnapped By Lesbian Pirates From Outer Space: Just as the title says.

Ice: Ice is about a future England where some climate catastrophe has occurred and it is always Winter. In the midst of this bleak setting Hunter and her boyfriend Cirr struggle to survive, their lives made even more dangerous when they come into possession of something that may be the solution to England’s energy crisis … an item others are willing to kill for.

Intrepid Girlbot: A wordless comic about a lonely robot determined to be a "good girl" and her part-cyborg raccoon friend.

Jack: NSFW! Trigger warning: Please note that Jack can be graphically violent, and does feature stories about rape, suicide, etc. A furry comic about Serious Issues - grey morality, Hell, redemption, choices, love, Fate, suicide, rage, guilt. The Grim Reaper and Sin of Wrath is a green rabbit named Jack. God is a lamb.

Kagerou: A (very disturbed) young man is chosen to be the champion for a princess and save her from those who would take her. The coloring style for this comic is very distinct.

Kevin & Kell: I've been following this for over a decade now. A wolf is married to a rabbit; Sunday funnies-style drama ensues.

Lackadaisy: Prohibition-era cats.

Lady Sabre & the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether: "The adventures of the Lady Seneca Sabre and those she meets along the way as she travels the Sphere. Who she fights, who she foils, who she befriends. It’s about adventure and romance and excitement and, to paraphrase the great Zaphod Beeblebrox, “really wild things.”"

Magick Chicks: A spin-off from Eerie Cuties, following a trio of witches who are transferred into an all-girl school where fighting evil monsters is taught. One of the monster hunters is named Tiffany.

Marry Me: A pop star sees someone in her concert audience carrying a MARRY ME sign... and randomly marries him on stage.

Menage a 3: NSFW! A sexy sitcom set in Canada, about a virgin man who lives with two very different women.

Monster Pulse: Bina's been having some trouble at home and in school, but now that an accident has transformed her heart into a monster twice her size, that doesn't seem so important anymore.

Mythfits: Appears defunct? If so, that makes me sad. A comic in which a unicorn loves a robot.

Nic Buxom: NSFW! The life of a professional dominatrix/switch, which appears somewhat based on the creator's real life.

No Rest For The Wicked: Another defunct, but I love this comic so much that I'm going to pretend it's just on a long hiatus. The princess from The Princess and the Pea sets off with Puss In Boots and Little Red Riding Hood to find the Moon.

The Non-Adventures of Wonderella: The best superhero online.

Oglaf: NSFW! A fantasy comic that often has funny sexual situations.

Other People's Business: I will copy Sandra's description of her comic: "After a tragic event, down-on-her-luck Daniela "Danny" Alvarez is being coaxed back into a life of normality by her best friend, sensible sous chef Mercedes, when a smart-mouthed sleazy little thief bursts through Danny's window and drags her into a world full of conspiracies, cults, and evil corporations, and accidentally gets Danny on the road to feeling human again."

Platinum Grit: On a very, very long hiatus, and I hope for it to return so badly that I refuse to move it to the Abandoned/Finished section. The art is beautiful, and I love Kate. I don't understand what's going on, but I assume I just need to reread it carefully.

PowerPuff Girls Doujinshi: An epic cross-over that primarily stars the PowerPuff Girls and Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory.

Red String: A manga-style comic about high schoolers in Japan searching for love and identity.

Roza: Roza is a girl trying to find someone to undo her curse.

Sailor Moon CS: Rebooting the shoujo series as a shounen one.

Sailor Twain, or the Mermaid in the Hudson: Another historical webcomic. The title at first made me think of Sailor Moon or mermaids, but I can assure you, neither are here.

Sea Of Insanity: The Greek gods in the human world. I hope I don't have to bump this to "abandoned" status.

Shivae! Vas and Shivae! Cler: It bills itself as "Bambi, except with carnivores," and that's pretty accurate. The carnivores have a distinct dinosaur feel to them.

Shi Long Pang, the Wandering Shaolin Monk: Kung fu action-adventure comedy in 17th century China.

Shortpacked!: Drama in a toy store.

Something*Positive: Sarcastic slice of life.

Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki: Magical Girl comic with a Norse mythology bent.

SPQR Blues: A soap opera set in Ancient Rome.

Subnormality: The wordiest comic you will ever, ever read. The Sphynx is the best character in it.

Tales from the Middle Kingdom: Based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, drawn in a brush style.

Tiny Kitten Teeth: Y'all, this is a HAND-PAINTED webcomic. Not just hand-drawn, painted. The style is lush and gorgeous, the characters are kill-your-brain-with-sugar adorable, and the writing isn't lacking either. But honestly, I read it for the art.

The Thin H Line: NSFW! Trigger warning: Both comics feature attempted incest, suicide, etc. Sexy Losers (also NSFW) continued in a stripped-down style and posted to Tumblr.

The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: Historical personages Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage build a difference engine and fight crime. Yes, it is as awesome as it sounds.

Velia, Dear: Slice of life.

The Way To Your Heart: A guilty pleasure. Manga-style comic set in Japan about a visual kei band and their love lives.

Wind Spirits: By covenmouse. A great comic with fantastic art and setting.

Zahra's Paradise: Each comic page happens in real time. Set in Iran. Amazing.

Comics That Are Now Completed or Abandoned:

The 10k Commotion: DDR teams compete in a DDR Tournament in Hawaii. Completed.

Bite Me!: Vampires during the French Revolution. Hilarious. Completed.

Boy Meets Boy: Relationship and friendship drama. The apartment is owned by the daughter of Satan. Completed.

The Class Menagerie: Animals coping in college. Completed, but the archives are a bit of a mess (author tried to re-arrange them into plot arcs after he'd finished it, but IMO it didn't work out too well).

Copper: The fantastic adventures of a dog and their person. Abandoned.

Dawn of Time: A young cavewoman named Dawn, armed only with her determination and only a little common sense, sets out to make her way in the savage wild, including befriending a blue triceratops named Blue. Indefinite Hiatus/Abandoned.

Demonology 101: High school-age demon girl gets caught up in evil forces. Completed.

Digger: The epic journey of a Wombat named Digger. Completed.

Dragon Tails: Dragons! Alas, abandoned.

Empty Words: Short (only 150-ish pages) but sweet. Completed.

Ever After: A mental institution for nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters. Abandoned.

Fantasy Realms: Full-color fantasy comic about magic and politics. Appears abandoned.

Friendly Hostility: Two supporting characters from Boy Meets Boy have their own comic, and their own drama. Completed.

Queen of Wands: A group of friends dealing with life and retail jobs. Completed.

Of Snakes and Apples: Eve tries to get along with Adam and navigate the rules and mysteries of the Garden of Eden. Fair warning: EVERYONE IS NAKED so yes you do see penises and breasts. However, this is not done for erotic purposes; they're just naked because there is no nudity taboo. Abandoned.

Ozy and Millie: Two school-age (one a Zen gray fox, the other a spunky red fox) friends talk philosophy. Completed.

Penny & Aggie: High school drama. Completed.

Return to Sender: Strange mail arrives. Abandoned.

Roomies! / It's Walky!: Roomies! turns into IW! in late '99/early 00. I stopped reading after IW! completed, and at the time the sequel, Joyce and Walky!, was pay-only so I've never read that. Anyway, Roomies! is a typical strip about college drama... until the aliens abduct some of them. Abductees are recruited to an alien-fighting task force.

Saturnalia: Set in the future, a police officer gets pulled into an underground group trying to fight against anti-android discrimination. Abandoned.

She Died in Terrebonne: A mystery set in 1970s Oregon. Completed.

Suburban Jungle: Model/actress Tiffany Tiger dealing with love life stumbles and career problems. Completed.

Super Idol: Short comic by Warren Ellis, about a virtual celebrity who becomes self-aware. Completed.

Thunderstruck: Two sisters in New Orleans, where all the (global) myths are true. Abandoned.

Unicorn Jelly: A witch and her sentient jelly... in a multiverse with its own physics. Complete. I've yet to read the spinoffs (Pastel Defender Heliotrope and To Save Her), also completed, but I'll probably need to reread UJ first (haven't read since 2003).

Venus Envy: A high school-aged M-to-F trans girl dealing with transitioning and high school drama. Abandoned.

Nothing makes me happier than finding a new webcomic for me to archive binge until I'm dead tired. If you show me one, you would rock my socks so damn hard, the afterglow would last a week.
