About the song: it's an odd thing, that. You are absolutely correct that Captain Kidd's first name was William, but for some unknown reason, most of the broadsheet versions of the song printed around that time call him "Robert". I can't figure why they did. Maybe "Robert" sounds more wicked and piratey than "William"? Dunno.

Anyway, I kept to the broadsheet version because I am A Massive Nerd and I like silly bits of random historical ephemera like that! Another example of my historical silliness I've inserted here purely for my own pleasure: there really was a Fr. Cassidy teaching at a chapel school at Coolock, north of Dublin in the early 18th century. Poor soul. I hope wherever he is he doesn't mind I have written him cavorting with pirates-in-training...
