Yesterday my Dad told me that our neighbour died Sunday night. We were quite close since his wife is my Dad's cousin. Rainer was only 50 something and left behind his wife, son, and father.
He had a heart attack about a year back from which he recovered, but shortly after he had another heart attack which led to a cardiac arrest. The ambulance came and he was revitalized, but the cardiac arrest had been long enough for most of his brain cells to be destroyed. He went into a waking coma from which he never really awoke. If he had awoken, he'd have been on the level of a toddler since his brain was damaged beyond repair. He was basically kept alive by machines for a year, artificial breathing, fed with a stomach probe, could only sit in a wheelchair. Every once in a while he'd roll his eyes or make grunts... basically the ambulance saved a life, but not a human being.
His son told us that he had caught a severe pneumonia and went into the intensive care unit of a specialised hospital again where he died Sunday night. I suppose it's for the better since the life he ended up living was no life, but mere vegetating...
Funeral will be on Friday. I will only go to the service in church, not the actual funeral. I don't think I could bear seeing him actually being buried...
