It only occured to me how much IIDC took out in me when I saw my phone bill for this month. Yes, it is a blessing that I'm a post-paid subscriber. Anyway, my participation in the IIDC was long hence get ready for a long-ish entry.
The Debates
Teaming up with
Jessica and
Biboy was one of the best moves ever. We had a set first speaker and a cleaner upper of cases. And I was even able to construct in one round. My whipping skills was really put to the test. Kamusta naman, who knew whipping for nearly all of the rounds in the try-outs would be an omen for things to come? But yeah, it was fun being with them. Even though we lost a round with a motion we had previously prepped for.
And speaking of losing, I cannot accept that my speeches sucked that much. How could I lose that many rounds? How could I lose to such teams?! Okay fine, I can accept some of the teams I lost to but the key word there is some. That's it time to work on being understood by other people. I mean we weren't brilliant or anything but we were pretty okay. WUH! Tama nga ang fear ko nung 7th round, the adjes may not have liked us. Lesson learned, will work on clarity. Something that, yes I concede, I should've worked on long ago. But then again no matter how much training I do, nothing can prepare me or my teammates from the wrath of some adjes. But again, point taken, there must be a reason why we aren't understood. And dear God I will work on it. If I'm able to pry myself off from PRO duties and my *sigh* failing acads (more on this later, 'cause it's sad).
I had one really good round though. Opcors it had to the one motion where I had all the matter. Heller a motion that involves both media and gender. We weren't particularly brilliant in that round, but it was good because I was really really confident in what the hell I was saying. Yay!
We didn't break, but it was still worth it. Definitely. What I said during breaknight was true. I didn't have a crying moment during the prelims. That was because there was nothing to cry about. (Well, there was I just chose not to think of it).
The Tournament
By now everyone who wore a walky talkie and headset during the tournament must know that I am a paranoid bitch. And that's not even describing to what I was after rounds for the day ended. It's just that the walky talkies are worth more than what the mom earns for a month. But even though I was stressed about the safety and safe-keeping of the expensive things, it still helped in making IIDC 5 one of the best if not the most well-run tournament on record. I haven't ended a whole day of debating with the sun still up. And I'm not just saying that because I'm part of the BOD.
Of course, if there were cool looking gadgets, there were people who were using them. Thanks so much to the floor managers, especially to head floor manager
Louie, who were thrust with the responsibility of harrassing the adjes for the ballots. Siyempre thanks goes to the other people who directed them, but they have a special heading. Hehehehe...
It feels amazing to have helped make the tournament possible. Even though I think my name is blacklisted in Nestle and Smint now. I would still be willing to do the same thing, but I'd rather we have more money so I don't feel like I'm begging. Which I am but I don't want the companies to know that.
Break night was also fun. I'm guilty of knowing only one song by Stonefree, at least one song that I knew they sang. I didn't know that there were some songs that I liked that they were the ones who made it. Akala ko talaga one of their songs was a Hale song. Discovery of discoveries talaga!
A well run tournament is an amazing thing. UPD may not have reached the finals, but I think people will definitely remember that it is the UP Diliman Debate Society who gives the best and most kickass tourney in the country. Next year we'll get them. We're going to regain the championship back. Bold words, but I have faith in UPD.
The Congratualations
The biggest congrats of all should go to
Nico for taking on the stress of being TD even if he knew he was bad with stress. Because it was him who harrassed the heck out of people and worked the hardest in this tournament.
Next (and there will be a trend here), congrats and thanks goes to the rest of the BOD. Especially to
Joan because she was my co-director and the one who charmed the pants of the TRG guy, too bad they didn't have any money to give us, and ang demanding nila. Kay Gino din, because he has really perfected the art of logistics. Shet, what will we do without you next year?!?!
Celeni congrats. In fairness to you, doing the promo work and winning ESU. Wuh! CK goes to UK!!! Sooo proud of you!!! Will be rooting for you here in Manila, unless of course I suddenly win the lotto and get enough money to go to England.
To the whole UPD contingent, congrats!!! Tons of good vibes and congratulations must be heaped on
Jonats, Yang and
Jon-jon for making it to the semi-finals! Miya is proud, oh so definitely proud! Next year, finals na.
So all in all, IIDC was fun. I got stressed and all but still, fun. Next year, we hope to top ourselves more and deliver the best tournament possible. And hopefully get more money from the folks who are supposed to give us money.
The grades thing pa pala. Got a 2.25 for both CL 121 and CL 150. Himala! But still GWA looks bad. Two 2.25s , a 2 and a 2.5. I don't think I'll get anything higher than a 2 for CL 122. I'm not sure about Soc Sci 3. Sad, what happened to me? Was I that busy???!!!??!!?!
Pahabol: Spoiler for VM 2.17!!! Shet! Rob Thomas, you knew I was still a believer didn't ya? And with "Sway" nontheless. *dies*
