I can't seem to find my copy of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince which saddens me because after watching the movie twice, I wanted to either curl up with the book for a re-read or read fanfics.
First off, the movie is amazing, the first of all the series that I feel could win an Oscar.
Anyway,
I liked the fact that the movie is more serious. Of course the whole romantic angle annoyed me to no end. I mean, I get it there's romance but this isn't a teen movie you know. Hormonal teenagers talaga. But yes, it was more serious and the liberties that they took with the text was fine by me.
The first thing that is really different is the lack of an epic ending fight scene. Various interviews have stated that having no fight scene was to keep the epic for the last two movies and I agree, it would have been too much. Just think about Two Towers and its epic battle which felt like it should have been kept for RoK just so we're not tired of seeing epic battles. It made Dumbledore's death all the more poignant.
If there was an epic battle, it would have taken the gravity of the Astronomy Tower scene away. There's going to be panic involved and the whole thing would seem rushed, the way it was in the book, it didn't look like Dumbledore truly sacrificed himself and just seemed as if he was a casualty of war (which also has its strong plot and characterizatiob points but yes...) In the movie, there was true conflict. And quiet. It was really the silence in the scene that did it for me. Sure Bellatrix was yelling her crazy head off, but other than that, silence. There was a feeling that something bad was going to happen, which of course was Dumby's death.
Sure the death didn't seem as super epic as in the books, but it's fine.
What's more is that it made Draco's hesistance seem all the more real. In the book there was tension, but not as much tension as Bellatrix whispering in your ear.
Speaking of Draco...
Honestly, was there any reason why the movies kept relegating Draco to the background? Because Tom Felton is such an amazing actor that he did not deserve to only be highlighted now. And he was effing brilliant. There was subtlety in his performance and you felt his pain. Of course I may be a bit biased, but yes, Draco should have been highlighted a bit more in the other movies just so it would'nt seem so incongrous (sp?) that suddenly he's thrust into something like this.
On to other things now.
DanRad was fuuny, especially in the Felix Felicis scene. Pinchers is now my favorite random move. Emma was hot and even Rupert's getting better.
I wish the movie cut out some Lavender parts and that the whole idea behing the Half-Blood Prince was explained. Mostly because it really helped Snape's characterization. Ginny is well I've grown to love her in fanfics but I'm still indifferent with her in canon.
I also did not notice that Cho Chang is there, thanks!
Sadly there was a lack of good Dramione-ish moments. And the books had some of those, but they did point out that Hermione calls Draco by his given name. Also, I'm used to it, because my ship requires a lot of tinahatting.
Watching HBP with LF is so fun. To my left was
Drew who is a Harry/Hermione shipper and to my right was
Robs who's a Draco/Harry shipper. Between the three of us, there was a lot of inappropriate comments made.
Yes Dumbledore, all you need is Severus.
