“Leaving so soon?”
The activity of the entire hall seemed to grind to a halt as every man turned towards the door to see who Robb was speaking to.
Dacey froze, her plan to quietly sneak away from the revelry shattered with those few words. She cursed the man she called King under her breath and turned around to face the room of men.

“I felt my threshold for idiotic drunkards filled for the night, my liege,” she replied loudly, her irreverent smile assuaging the pointed barb and earning her a smattering of good-natured guffaws. Robb propped his arm against the hilt of his greatsword, leaning to the side as he studied her. She could feel the threat of an oncoming blush at his lazy perusal of her borrowed finery, not missing how his gaze lingered at the low-cut neckline.

Never having lived in such a warm place as these southern lands, she had been forced to wear the white silk gown one of the ladies had loaned her. She was unused to such a light fabric against her skin, its insubstantial constitution not much of a proper barrier against Robb’s penetrating gaze.

“Come dance with me, then,” he spoke suddenly, “and help me remind these wastrels what a civilized man looks like.” Whoops of encouragement were heard across the hall and Dacey bit the inside of her cheek, trying and failing to hold back a smirk.

“Oh, surely there are many more eager partners for you?” She nodded to the figure just behind him. “Perhaps Greyjoy? He’s been nipping at your heels all night for such an opportunity.” The roars of laughter filled the hall to bursting, wiping the ever-present cocky grin off the young man’s face for once. Robb laughed along with the others and clapped his friend on the back before looking back at her.

“More eager, I’ll admit, but none as beautiful as you.”

Dacey rolled her eyes and was about to retort with some witty rejoinder- too used to the men’s teasing for her to take the compliment seriously- but when she caught his eye, she was struck with the searing intensity of his gaze. He looked positively sincere, and that fact made her heartbeat suddenly race at an unnaturally fast pace. Before she could stutter out some pathetic response, he spoke again, taking her silence for reluctance.
“Maybe I’ll teach you how to follow the lead for once,” he challenged. She heard the half-hidden chuckles and low whistles from somewhere in the back, and she snapped out of her daze, forcing herself to appear unaffected.

“I doubt it my lord,” she said in a falsely sweet voice, taking a daring step towards him. “But you can try.”

A loud cheer went up amongst the men, and they made a circle around the two of them as a scattering of instruments started up a tune. Robb’s gaze never left hers, and when he took her hand in his, she couldn’t help but think about how much he looked every inch the young wolf that he had been dubbed. She felt sorry for any prey he chose to pursue with that piercing look.

The one he was pinning on her now.
