On the Road Again At Last - August 11-13

Sep 08, 2006 11:24

Today dawned clear and pleasantly cool. I got the pets squared away and headed off for the LBA at 9 AM, the tires are properly inflated, the trailer is greased, the new luggage rack is way cool and all in all everything is right with the world. I decided to go to Buena Vista by going over the Blue Ridge at Snickers Gap on US 33, then south on US 360 to Greenville where I'll pick up US 11 south to Lexington and US 60 east to Buena Vista. Its a pretty ride with mostly wide sweeping curves and grand vistas. The ride from the house to Waynesboro was a motorcyclist's dream - pleasantly cool, broken white puffy clouds in a bright blue sky and the Blue Ridge standing out clearly after yesterday's rain and a nice clear dry road under the tires. YES !!!!!

Then I hit Waynesboro, where boys with big toys are playing with the roads. The first 2 detours went just fine but the third one was much longer and I either missed a sign or there was no sign where there should have been one because the next thing I know I'm in Sherando headed for Sherando Lake and the Blue Ridge Parkway beyond. This isn't exactly the way I want to be going so I turn around in Sherando and take the road to Stuart's Draft and US 11 only to find that the boys with big toys have been here and laid down a nice layer of new gravel on the road. Bummer. So I take it nice and easy all the way to US 11, then head on south. It is now 11:30 AM and I should already be in Buena Vista. Oh well, its LBA time and its best to just let things unfold. I run into a light rain shower along the way to add to the fun but all goes well and I'm at the Affair by 12:30 PM.

And a wonderful Affair it was too. Not as many folks as in some years, but the NoName MC riders were all there. The weather stayed cool enough to make riding wonderful and warm enough to allow swimming. The Memorial for Jim Colburn was well attended Saturday and many of the folks choose to take one of his favorite circuit rides as a final tribute. Jane and I headed over to Goshen Pass Saturday afternoon, we made quite a pair with me on a Fatboy and her on a Honda scooter. The camp feast Saturday was wonderful and Kat's door prizes from Japan were a definite hit. All to soon it was Sunday morning and time to head home. The ride home was a quiet one for me, my friends are aging and I'm sure there will be more memorial rides not too far down the road for me to attend. Keep the Rubber Side Down and Ride it Like Ya Stole It.
