SPN 405: A classic treat for fans

I first came across Ben Edlund as the writer of Jaynestown ("The hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!") - one of my favourite Firefly episodes. He's since gone on to co-executive produce Supernatural and is responsible for an array of episodes, ranging from good (e.g. Nightshifter) to ones with mixed fan reactions (e.g. Bad Day at Black Rock, Ghostfacers and Hollywood Babylon).

With Monster Movie, Edlund served up one classic treat for SPN fans - and in particular, one very special fangirl, whose story makes me appreciate the episode (esp. a certain major guest star and her lines) and generally, Kripke and team, even more - if that's even possible! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this B&W tribute to the old classic monster/horror genre - script, staging, lighting, music et al. It was also good to see the Winchester boys back to simply "saving people, hunting things" as before. I'm also rather amused by Dean's hillarious need to reassert his masculinity this season, what with lines about his "perky nipples" and the Dude's need to "rehymenate," wearing lederhosen, and of course, discovering that he's named after his maternal grandma, Deanna. Dean meeting Castiel (and finding God's calling) has resulted in interesting self-revelations ... or perhaps, the writing crew is playing one big prank on Jensen! Side note: The "near death" discussion between Dean and Jamie caught me by surprise. Nice touch, very well done, but ... any chance we can have one for Sam too?

I did miss the building intensity from the first four episodes but after the constant negative news in the market these days, this was a welcome relief. Besides, judging from next episode's trailer and preview clip, we'll be picking up on that in no time!
