silly rose's picture

Photographed by our friend Cal last night:

I know, it doesn't look like a sad time, does it? It's the last Tuesday night. Kenny wasn't there; it was a young, extremely facile pianist named Erik whom we've seen a couple times before. He delighted me by playing a gorgeous, high-spirited version of "Maple Leaf Rag", one of the best pieces of music in the history of the world. I sang "God's Song", maybe for the last time at Rose's, and there was at least one person there who loves the song and was mouthing all the words, and Erik and a couple other people said I did it really well, so that was nice. Velma followed with "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", and then Erik did "Louisiana", making it a Randy Newman set.

Earlier, with Clare, I did "Papa Was a Rodeo", and between the second and third verses I told the story of how Clare and Kenny did me the favor of learning the song -- Clare even transcribing it for me -- so I could sing it for Velma as a surprise birthday present. I told it because it was a representative Rose's story, of the things we're losing, and everyone understood that's why I told it.

I gather on Sunday night Kelly broke down in the middle of a song, and the audience finished it for her.

Tonight will be the last Wednesday. This is exhausting, but I can't imagine not going as much of this week as I can.
