Tales of Home Maintenance

Two tales, one trivial and one a little weirder, to relate for today's activities:

First, the hinge on my toilet seat snapped in two this morning. The lid fell and it just broke on impact. I would say that it scared the piss out of me, but I had already finished before it fell. I had to buy a new seat & lid this morning and I replaced it this afternoon. That was the trivial one.

Second, as I was mowing the back yard, I decided to mulch some of the leaves that had built up under the deck. As I was doing that, I noticed my blades were encountering an unusual amount of resistance in one area. By the time I pulled my mower away, I noticed a cable of some kind, with white insulation/coating, sticking out of the ground there, and chopped into three pieces: one coming out of the ground, one going into the ground, and one lying nearby that had been bridging the gap between the others. I wasn't sure if this was some bad electrical work. So, I had to get my multimeter and measured that whatever it was, there was no danger of electrocution. I dug it out, and it seems to have been some kind of hanging plant holder that had fallen and been mostly buried way before I owned the house. My lawnmower blades seem to be in OK shape despite trying to mow metal instead of grass. I, however, was so delayed by this that I only had time to finish the back yard before it was time to watch the NHL playoff games tonight. The front yard will have to wait until later this week.
