Graduating

Yesterday started out the way I expected it to. Graduation day was not as special to the rest of my family as it was to me. Who cares.

I waited it out with my fellow graduates under the heat of the sun. I actually sincerely thought that my skirt was melting from the heat until I realized that it was me who was melting. To heck with everyone else.. it was my day and no heat stroke was about to take it away from me.

We marched into the theatre at 1:30 pm, most of us smiling because we were already out of the sun, more than anything else. The march was as solemn as it could get, we had a comic invocation from CSSP valedictorian Chris Lao and then the not so honorable speaker was introduced.

The only good thing about the speech was that we were seated. The man droned on and on about ways to make our country better which, incidentally, was his thesis for god-knows-what. Don't get me wrong. I'm usually interested in those things but that day was my day, my skirt was sticking to my legs because of the sweat. The sablay was falling off my shoulders and my toes and heals were about to break off my bodyand give up. I would have appreciated it if the speech lasted for 15 minutes. That was as much as my attention span could take. Instead, the man spoke for a little over an hour that by the time he was finished, some of us gave him a standing ovation just to make sure he would get off the stage.

As I went to the side of the stage to get my diploma, my feet were hurting, and my mom still had unresolved anger from an episode of hormonal imbalance i had earlier that day. I got to the end of the stage and then my name was called. I think at that moment I felt for the first time that I am officially a UP graduate.

I got a medal because I graduated with honors. I did not attend the University graduation where I was supposed to get another medal. That one would have been plain torture.

I have no idea why I am still up. I couldn't sleep.
