Lore had spent most of her morning in the training center. She was starting to get nervous about her SeeD exam. Lore knew she wasn't stupid, but she had never exactly been a model student. Especially when it came to tests. Tests made her ( Read more... )

Lore tried not to laugh, but a snicker escaped. Still, she kept her eyes on the Grat. She wasn't going to make Zell's mistake. "Guess you're lucky you took a partner," she teased lightheartedly. She stepped closer, squaring her body and hitting the monster again in the center.

Zell brushed some dirt off himself as he stood back on his feet. He watched as Lore maneurvered rather impressivly for a Cadet. Since her big test was coming up, he figured he'd watch closely while she fought, giving any pointers and backup where needed.

"Nice punch!" he complimented. "Try getting in a combo!"

Lore nodded slightly and bit her lip. She might have normally felt a bit self-conscious at being watched, but she was too distracted by the thrill of the fight, the adrenaline rushing through.

She grounded her left foot behind her for balance and concentrated on getting the perfect combo out. She punched the monster twice in quick succession, then rounded off a kick. She managed to make decent contact, but her balance was off and her foot slid a little as she finished. She caught her balance, but still scolded herself in her head. "Sloppy," she muttered out loud.

Although she lost balance for a moment, Lore was actually pretty good. "S'alright! Everyone makes mistakes," he encouraged. "You're doing fine!"

Lore quickly dismissed her slip-up. She knew it wouldn't do her any good to focus on it until the monster was gone, or it would only be distracting. She hunched her shoulders around her neck protectively as the monster thwacked back in retaliaton. For something that looked like a plant, it had a punch to it. Then she returned the blow, hitting the Grat back and finally killing it.

Zell clapped his hands and announced, "Nice work! For you, the field exam should be cake." He paused a moment as he cast cure on himself and Lore, healing any minor wounds they had taken from the Grat's bashing. "How many more d'you wanna take on?" he asked when he had finished.

Lore grinned. Partly because the cure tickled a little, and partly because getting praise from someone who knew so much about her field was kind of cool. Still, it wasn't really the field exam she was worried about - it was getting there. Then it occured to her that maybe she had the perfect person right there. "Hey, can I ask you something instead?"

A curious expression spread across Zell's face. Whenever someone asked that question, Zell's interest was always piqued, so he could never say no to that question. "Huh? Sure, go ahead," he replied. Even though it probably was going to be a question about SeeD or something, Zell was still eager to hear what Lore wanted to ask.

Lore laughed at the intriqued look on his face. "It's not that exciting...it might be kinda personal though, so you don't hafta answer it if you don't want. Did you pass the written exam your first time?" SeeD candidates were allowed to take the written exam twice in one semester, so she knew there was always a chance she might fail the first time and still be able to make up for it.

Zell bit his lip and looked down at his feet. Yeah, he had passed it the first time. He didn't really look like it, but Zell was actually pretty smart. "Yeah, I did," he sheepishly replied. "I guess I just got lucky! Now Seifer on the other hand..." Zell frowned. "I don't think it's possible for any normal person to fail as much as he did."

"Maybe he didn't really want to pass," Lore thought out loud. "I don't think everyone who says they're going to take the test really WANTS to be a SeeD..it's just a reason to stay at Garden." She shrugged. "Or maybe not, who knows?" She scratched the back of her neck. "Was it surprising? I mean, was it..you know, tricky?" She frowned a little, wrinkling her nose. "Do you have to do math?"

Zell rubbed his chin in thought. Not really want to be a SeeD? He actually never thought about that. Being a SeeD was something Zell had always wanted to do, so he naturally assumed that everyone else at Garden wanted to be a SeeD as well.

"You only really have to do some basic math," Zell replied. "They're more concerned about what you know about battle an' stuff, but they wanna make sure you're not a complete idiot." He hastily added, "Er, and you're not. So... yeah."

Lore shook her head a little, laughing. "Well, I guess if I just have to not be a complete idiot, I can probably manage that." Maybe it was his attitude, his laid-back way of acting, but Zell was definitely surprisingly good at making her feel better. "I don't usually worry this much," she admitted, "but making SeeD is kind of huge. You know, considering it's why I've been here for the last 6 years and all."

Grinning, Zell agreed, "Yeah, bein' a SeeD is pretty cool. But once you pass the exam, it's pretty easy. Ya just get sent on missions and stuff, and no more exams! Well, unless you wanna go up in rank, but those exams are over easy stuff you learn from experience anyways."

"Good!" Lore replied. "Missions would be waay more exciting than tests!" She glanced down at her watch. "I promised my friend I'd meet him for lunch, so I better go. You want to come?"

At the mention of food, Zell realized how hungry he really was. He only had a small breakfast, and he could really go for some hot dogs. If they weren't sold out. "Alright! I could use some lunch!" he replied with a grin.
