I don't see how using a "quija board" would be dangerous. But if it is, then what do you suggest as an alternative?

They don't have the proper safety measures, and you'll never be able to see what's actually there. You may never know, you've actually let something dangerous out on your ship, and there'll be no way you can fix it unless you contact an expert.

Try cards. They're a good start for beginners. Some people make shikigami out of them.
