My mom was bitter forever that the things that were meant to be about aptitude in my high school ended up being about popularity. I was jaded about high school by the end of my second year, but she was still offended on my behalf that I didn't get into the National Honor Society, that a teacher unfairly gave me a bad enough grade to keep me off the honor roll, and other such things that I just couldn't bring myself to care about. I knew they'd go to the narcissists, and I couldn't be one of them if I tried. (I had tried, and failed miserably and quickly, and from then on just decided to spurn everything they did :) Worked for me.)
