An ode to my parents

My parents are celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary tomorrow and they are pretty great. They have always been beyond supportive of me and my sister, no matter how many times they had to sit through disturbing plays just to see the hats I made or how many ridiculously bland singers they had to listen to waiting for my sister's turn in the concert. More than anything, I know they will pretty much always have my back.

Which is why I didn't worry at all about calling them up yesterday with this gem:

"Oh hey Mom, if boxes start arriving to your house with my name on them, can you put them to the side? They'll be condoms for the condom drive I'm organizing."

To which my mom replied, "I never know what you're going to come up with next."

"Does this surprise you, Mom?"

"No," she said, "I read your Facebook."

In other news, my dad turns 60 tomorrow! 60! We whipped up a really great birthday treat for him and I think he'll be surprised and pleased. I think he's feeling a little bit thoughtful about this birthday, seemings as how he almost didn't make it here. He jokes a lot about how he never thought he'd be this old, but I am personally glad he is. Tonight is my mom's book club but after that, the ladies are going to stay and my dad's brother and sister are coming over with their families to drink some beers and say hooray. My dad can be difficult to understand sometimes because he is a champion mumbler, but once you understand what he's saying it's pretty clear that he's a funny and interesting guy. I'm lucky to have him around.
