Michael Jordan was inducted into the Hall of Fame this week, and said something unusual but something that I'm surprised more athletes don't say. Basically (paraphrasing) he said, "I'm honored, but I never really looked forward to this moment because it means my career is over. I always want to think I could go back out on the court and be a presence again, and I want everyone to think that, and this is an acknowledgement that it's not going to happen."
I was never a big fan of Jordan's when he was a player (he won too much), but leave it to a legendarily fierce competitor to describe the way I imagine I would feel as an aging athlete, and the way I did feel when I left my athletic pretensions behind many years ago. I'm really surprised more athletes don't say this, or something like it.
