Here is my entry for this month's theme contest. I didn't think I would be able to participate since I might be moving next week (still waiting to see). I thought, what's more traditional than Italian meat balls? I took it one step further and made a giant sandwich (I'm not even a Italian so I might as well butcher it). It so happened that my friend was coming to sleep over (don't judge, sleepovers are for any age) so she could help eat and take photos.
Supplies we will need. I won't even pretend there is a recipe here, just eyeball it.
First, let's make meat balls ground beef and pork.
bread crumbs, oregano, parsley, basil.
A wonderful thing about Japan is that they sell fresh garlic and ginger paste in tubes, for those times I just don't want to dice the hell out of ginger and garlic.
Handling big meat.
Advice from an Italian woman, put a cube of cheese in the centre of the meat ball
Ta Da!
I gots the balls.
Time to bake them.
Making the sauce, cover the tomatoes and steam them.
Let's have a rainbow of peppers
Tomatoes are done
Let's add celery, onion, and mushrooms
Some carrots for sweetness
Meat balls are done!
Italian woman advice #2, reduce the sauce
Sauce is reduced.
Add white wine to the reduced sauce (half cup) (Italian woman advice #3)
You should also drink wine while cooking...Fact!
So many steps I know, but now time to make garlic butter. Butter and garlic melted together.
Pretty darn easy
Italian family advice #4 Make garlic oil
Cook until garlic changes colour, then remove garlic from the oil.
Here comes the bread!
Spreading garlic butter on the bread
Add pasta (totally unnecessary, meat balls and sauce is enough, but hey this community is about over indulgence!)
Then add the balls
Add sauce on top of the balls
Le piece de resistance is the garlic oil on top. You can add the garlic oil on the pasta or on the sauce just before serving.
Finally cheese on top.
My friend has quite the job ahead of her.
Doing her best!
'tis a monster sandwich!
Kind of beautiful though.
Trying to eat it like a monster!
