I have a wireless Kobo. I quite like it. Light, easy to use (you can just drag and drop all the drm-free ones like the ones you get which are out of copyright) and if you do buy off the Kobo site it's nice and quick and they often have coupons for like 20-30% off.
Cory Doctorow (pubbed with Tor) releases his novels for free online under Creative Commons. In YA UF/fantasy & adult UF there's been a trend to e-only prequel/midquel novellas/short stories being released, which is neat. And in the same area, pubs are sometimes offering up the first book in a series for free for a limited time, to try and tempt people into getting the rest.

As for places to get free ebooks: try Gutenberg, EpubBooks, FeedBooks and ManyBooks.
