It's been a rollercoaster couple of days.

After the last post, Josh talked to the vet, who had gotten second opinions from the other vets in the office, who thought it might not be as dire as we thought. Yesterday Josh took Mooch in to the vet to have the feeding tube put in. They gave him food through it and took it well during the day, and let us know that they would keep him overnight for observation and then we could get him around 11 today.

Hepatic lipidosis generally has a 50/50 success rate on two conditions: one, if it's caught early (it wasn't), and two, if the liver accepts. The problem is that there's a chance that the liver, rather than healing itself, will go into overdrive and effectively burn itself out, which is what happened. There's no real way to know which way it'll go - if a cat can take the tube feeding for the first week there's generally a good outcome.

At around 8 they called, and let us know he didn't make it through the night.

For us, I think it's better that we at least tried to help him rather than wondering if it would have helped , and that if it wouldn't work, at least he went quickly. He was very likely asleep when he passed, and he's gotten lots of purr inducing cuddles throughout the week. We will be getting his ashes in about a week (in a box, as it should be for the Mooch). Sorry for bringing everyone else on the roller coaster with us

I won't be having any sort of birthday thing for now - Amanda, Caitlin and I are going to try to plan something early August for our birthdays.

We still haven't gotten the test results back from Josh's second round of blood tests, but he is starting to feel better.
