I've finally been told what my ward assignment is - I'm going to the Neurology/Neurosurgery ward. IOW: BRAAAAAAAAAINSSSS, everyone. (Probably means I should cut down on the Zombie Farm/Zombie Cafe/Zombie Lane games)
I can sum up my first day of my work as follows: Here is a giant stack of readings to do, get ready to be TESTED AGAIN. (insert screams of terror) Not that I'm really stressed about it, a lot of it is retesting skills we do know. Besides, I do need to train up in our department's specialities like EVDs and so on -- but I did get to assist in two lumbar punctures where the doctors tap your spinal fluid. (Most notable fact about this: INCREDIBLY BORING FOR PATIENT) You basically curl up in a c shape, and then the dr locates the 4-5 lumbar vertebrae, injects the painkiller, then taps with a needle to drain the cerebospinal fluid to fill at least 6 - 8 specimen bottles. Patients are requested not to move during the procedure, and it can take a while to drain enough CSF for the lab. We had to do it for a teenager once, and being young and naturally fidgety..."Are we done yet? Are we done yet? Are we really going to be done sooooon? You sure I can't text anyone at all?" Facebook withdrawal is so ugly, people. :p
Currently reading, well, not my readings *koff*, but Perfumes: A - Z Guide by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez. Surprisingly hilarious descriptions by people who are greatly more cultured than I am. Opening line: "The question that women casually shopping for perform ask more than any other is this: 'What scent drives men wild?' After years of intense research, we know the definitive answer. It is bacon. Now, on to the far more interesting subject of perfume."
One rates a rather painful "Faceless drone clone juice", or if that's bergamot, I'm a phallus impudicus! (common stinkhorn, yes, I had to look this up)
Not that it doesn't sound like wine reviews all the time-- some of it inspires scent memories, terrible, terrible puns (OH GOD I LOVE PUNS) and some education on the components that make up perfume. I suspect I'll hit this largely to expand my vocabulary, since I am currently in a job where perfumes? Not exactly something that will last 5 minutes in.
Other things I'm reading:
1)
Mark Watches and his sister blog Mark Reads where he covers in detail the series he's reading or watching. He loves the Avatar: Last Airbender. So do I!
2)
ROCK LEE'S SPRINGTIME OF YOUTH -- if a earnest ninja ever deserved his own series, he totally did. GLEE.
