All was well in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario sat on his throne with his missing eye covered by his hat. He and his bride Peach looked down upon their universe and were pleased with what they saw. Jack was busy preparing for the Autumn frosts. Hyrule, the Sacred Realm and the Twilight Realm were in harmony. The legendary Pokemon kept the balance of nature throughout the worlds. The stars were kept safe by Samus and Starfox. And soon all of their friends would unite for the annual tournament and festival.
Even those outside their universe were finally finally at peace with them. The Sega-verse, led by Sonic, held a tenuous truce with Mario's dimension. The hedgehog even brought more friends from the universes of Sony, Konami, and a weird city called New York. (Giant turtles that didn't want to destroy the kingdom he fought to protect were a welcome novelty.) He couldn't imagine how things could get more perfect, but he knew they would.
But then Saria, Sage of the forest, rushed into the throne room. "I'm sorry, Mario. Strangers from beyond the veil of our universe are coming! They bring giants!"
"Don't-a worry, Saria," Mario said in a confident calming voice. "We'll-a stop them. We always do. Call upon every hero in-a the universe." The plumber rose from his throne and prepared for battle. He faced universe destroying evil before and won. He knew that with his friends with him, he could do it again.
Hours after Saria's warning to all the allied universes, they fell. Evas marched across the fields of Hyrule having killed Link and Ganondorf in one blow. They continued into the Realm of the Twilight and likewise decimated it and all who dwelt in it.
On the planet Thebes, the Mother Brain, leader of the space pirates, was impaled upon a pike. In heaps around her were the corpses of her army. Every pirate, general and metroid was murdered. The last that was seen of Samus Aran was as the mechs stepped on her repeatedly. Team Starfox fared no better.
Kirby was chewed like a piece of bubblegum. The legendary Pokemon captured by Team Rocket after they made an agreement with the enemy. But shortly after every rare beast of their world was contained, Jessi and James were sent blasting off for the last time ever. Into the sun. The pokemon were then used to wipe out the unsuspecting universes of Sega. Sonic was brought down by a concerted attack from the five Legendary Birds, and his Chaos Emeralds taken from him.
And in the Mushroom Kingdom, the leader of the conquering army sat upon the thrown. He grined as he watch the Hamato brothers slaughtered before him by his generals. And Mario saw he was next. How could he have been so powerless? Was there really no hope?
"Of course there isn't," a voice in the plumber's mind answered. "There never was." Mario looked up at the userper as the first general, Dan, shackled him to the guillotine.
"Any last words, Super Mario?" the false king asked.
Mario looked in the eyes of his slayer, Asuka, then into the eyes of the one who took his throne and said, "There will come one greater than you who shall do ten times worse than what-a you do to me, Abel."
The last image Mario saw as the blade severed his head from his neck was that of Abel Demetri Rewanz, the most evil of cubi, laughing at his warning.
Mario awoke in a cold sweat and sat up in his bed. Never in his life had he been more frightened. He silently pushed back the covers. He had to make sure everyone else was okay. He crept to Misty's room. She seemed to be having a fitful rest herself, but she was alive and well. Then he snuck to Sonic's room. He was sleeping like a baby.
Mario tip-toed back to his room. He wanted desperately to call Peach, Samus, and several others to see if they were well. He checked a clock near his bed. It was barely three in the morning. He'd have to wait until sunrise at the earliest to check in on them. He sighed and slunk back into bed. He'd be getting no rest that night.
That was the last time he would read Norse mythology before bedtime.
